Columbus - This Weekend!

Meet Tammy Pavlic...
My name is Tammy Pavlic!  I am married and have three grown boys, ages 28, 22 and 20, as well as two living furbabies. I have lived in Westerville over 20 years, and I work in healthcare.  I have been making jewelry for about seven years mainly as a hobby, this will be my first Avant Garde day art and craft show.  I am super excited to get out there and sell my products at the show!
I have done lettering and calligraphy for over 30 years, all self taught and I am always discovering new surfaces to write on, which is how I found the earrings. My creative process is truly a gift (from God) – I can always see the finished product before I start and it has always turned out the way I envisioned it.
Currently it is still a side hobby so I hope in five years it continues and will always be a passion of mine that I love to share with others.  I cannot wait for this weekend!  I love to chat about what I do, and I cannot wait to chat with everyone this weekend.

Meet Daniell Barton from Daniell Barton Art...
Every individual thinks their journey of becoming an artist is special and Daniell feels she is no exception to the rule.

Daniell is often asked if she is self-taught or if she has had formal training. Daniell recognizes that it is a gift from God with no formal education; other than the semester she had that was required her freshman year of high school. The two pencil drawings shown are from her freshman year in high school. She thoroughly enjoyed this time in class as it was Daniell’s first experience of art having a voice for her. Life changes required Daniell to leave that school system. She would not have an art experience again until 2010, Daniell was at a very painful time in her life when her inner voice led her to a small art studio in Canton, Georgia where she would meet Patricia Reeves who would introduce her to oil painting. Daniell poured her heart, soul into painting where she would experience the healing power of art. Daniell’s very first oil painting was what she needed most and so appropriately called, “My Comforter”. That season didn’t last long, because life changes again required her to leave and it would be almost seven years before she would hold a brush in her hand. In 2019, Daniell made a decision out of that place of need to live life and live life outloud that she finally made a mental, physical, emotional, spiritual decision that art had to become her purpose and destiny; because it was a gift from above and that passion was a need to be met. It was her destiny. Daniell loves all kinds of art. In high school it was pencils. In 2010, she touched oils and loved the texture and the medium giving her a sense of feeling like she was a real artist. Then Daniell discovered watercolors where you’ll often hear her say, “…with watercolors you learn to lose control of your life, I mean paint.” LOL Daniell wants to continue to grow and learn all mediums and never be boxed in as a certain kind of artist. “Who likes to be boxed in?” She says, “Not me! I want to “Live Art Outloud”.

On a more personal note… Daniell was born and raised a Hoosier, but most of her adult life where her husband, Mark and she raised their two boys was in Atlanta GA. Daniell’s former life there was as a real estate broker and direct sales. Daniell currently resides back in the Hoosier state, but remember that box… it will not contain her and we will probably be moving to get closer to the grandbabies in 2020. At least she hopes!
Daniell find inspiration through anything beautiful that catches her eye.  She is excited to come back for her second Avant Garde Art & Craft Show.  In closing, Daniell’s art journey is just beginning and she thanks you for being part of it.

Meet Nancy Sewell...
I got into jewelry making when I retired.  I found that I saw many quality jewelry pieces that I liked for myself, but always thought that much of it seemed overpriced for the work involved in making it.  Since starting my own jewelry line, I've come to find out that is not always true - it is quite some work!

My whole family has always been generally artistic to some degree, including myself.  Throughout my life, I was always involved in some type of artistic pursuit.  That being said, I started making the jewelry line I currently make a little over a year ago.  This is my first Avant-Garde Art and Craft show and I sure am excited!

When it comes to my inspiration, I find that making jewelry is an artistic outlet for me that I find fun and fulfilling.  The creative process behind my work involves studying other artist's work and taking what I like about their pieces and putting my own spin on them to incorporate them into my own jewelry.  I hope that people see the love and care that I put into my work and appreciate the pieces just as much as me!

Meet Marcie Estep from Marcie's Mason Jar Decor...
My name is Marcie. This is my fifth year teaching in the Columbus area. My husband and I are very excited to be expecting our first child in January. I have been creating custom mason jars for about a year now and it just gets better by the day!

This is the second Art and Craft Show I have participated in and I am so excited to return.  I love to furnish homes with custom made decor for every season and holiday, incorporating client's favorite colors and themes.

I got into the craft because I was searching for a way to relieve stress when I discovered Mason Jar decorating and I discovered my love for creating at a flea market in my home town. If I am creating a piece without client input, I tend to walk through the floral department at a local craft store and see which flowers capture my eye. I tend to lean more towards wild flowers and yellows.
In 5 years, I see myself attending local arts and craft shows, sharing my love of mason jar decor with others. It is not my intention to start a large business, but to continue making decor that makes myself and others happy and their homes even more "homey".

I hope that my customers are in tune with the message behind my work: Home is where the heart is.

It's Almost Show Time, Columbus!

Meet Molly from Buckeye Baby Beads...
I am originally from Columbus, and currently live in Powell with my husband, 1 year old son, and Boston Terrier. I am an Ohio State Alum and an avid Buckeye fan, which is the reason for creating Buckeye Baby Beads!
I work in the financial industry by day, so this opportunity to use my creativity and be my own boss has been very rewarding so far! I have been in the business for about four months, and this will be my first time participating in an Avant-Garde show!
My mom is an artist and a teacher, and I have always admired her creativity. When I was growing up, she was always painting, sewing, and designing. Although I do not have her talent as a painter, I am excited to be following in her footsteps!
I have always made gifts for friends and family, but never had the desire to sell anything. I had the idea to create a buckeye necklace that babies can chew on when my son was 6 months old, and kept grabbing at my buckeye necklace to chew. In 5 years, I'd love for Buckeye Baby Beads to be a must-have baby shower gift for buckeye fans!

Meet Katie Roush from Katie's Ooak Dolls...
My name is Katie Roush and I am a self taught doll maker but learned to sew from my Grandmother. We would spend hours at the old black Singer machine. I took to it rather quickly.  I now have branched out into a new line called Pawsh Pets. So, in addition to my soft sculpted character dolls and pet portrait dolls, I make clothing, pet carriers and leash sleeves for your well loved fur babies.
You can visit my work on FB at: https://www.facebook.com/katiesdolls/
I have been sewing for over 40 years and have made everything from clothing to toys. I would sew up special Christmas gifts for each of my three daughters for Christmas. One year I decided to skip it thinking it would not matter and I was wrong! So, I had to make their gifts extra special the next year. I have always been artsy ever since I can remember. My first memory of creating was playing with paper dolls and making clothes out of paper and crayons because I wanted something different.
I have participated in three Avant-Garde shows last year. I made a commitment to do a Christmas show elsewhere and that was a big mistake. I am now only going to do the Avant Garde shows. I believe the crowd is more attuned to all the handmade work that is displayed there.
I'm inspired by my youngest daughter, Krystle, who loved to craft and create with me, especially the dolls. When she passed away three years ago, I started sewing again, doll making, as a way to heal. I took my love of a hobby and turned it into something unique. Her memory also has inspired me to launch Pawsh Pets. She loved to dress up my dogs and cats.  I am an animal lover so, creating these things for fur babies is pure joy for me. My pet portrait dolls are exactly that, a portrait painted on muslin that becomes an heirloom. I have clients as far away as the U.K. with these whimsical works of art.

I discovered my talent as each doll was sculpted. I realized how joyful it was seeing them come alive right in my hands. When people started to fall in love and request them, that is when I knew I had talent. It was purely accidental. That was well over 30 years ago!
My creative process.. I see something in my head, and my hands just create it. I also get inspired by fabric. I see a certain pattern or style and I just have to do something with it. I love to take a pattern and just run with it. Patterns are like recipes, a starting point. I just add to it as the doll or outfit comes alive.

The message behind my work is that I spread joy. If I make something and it makes you laugh or just "have to have it," then that makes me happy.

Meet Harmony Becker from Songbird and Summer Storm...
My name is Harmony Becker and I am a visual artist who is part of the two person studio, Songbird and Summer Storm, which I run with Erica Feld. We were both trying to get into the animation industry when we decided we wanted more creative control over what we produce, so we decided to start selling art at comic conventions and craft fairs. We started our studio at the beginning of 2016 and this is our first show with Avant-Garde!
I grew up in a very creative environment; my dad is a painter and my mom does a lot of drawing and sewing, so I've always been encouraged to be creative. I've been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil, so creating has always been a very natural part of my life. I draw inspiration from moments that happen around me every day, as well as from a lot of amazing artists who I look up to.
I do a lot of work in the computer, painting in Photoshop with a stylus and tablet. If I'm not working digitally, I'm usually sketching on copy paper or doing small watercolor sketches. I use a lot of Copic markers as well.
In 5 years I hope that we'll be established and successful! I'm hoping to start a Patreon by the end of the year so that I can continue to make work that is meaningful to me and that other people are excited to see.

Meet Shan Baker from My Pillow Parlor...
In 2010, I moved to Columbus from San Diego. I have never been more inspired by the local art scene than I have been here in Columbus. There are some truly talented artists in Columbus, and I'm honored to have my work displayed beside theirs.
I've been making my own pillows for over 10 years and this will be my first Avant-Garde show as a vendor, as opposed to a patron. I'm very excited to be a part of the show on the other side!
I'm inspired to create by my own home. I discovered my talent by making pillows for my own home, and having friends and family asking for them as gifts. My creative process centers around creating things I would love and appreciate in my own home.
In 5 years, I'd like to be in the same place I am now, putting 110% of my time into what I'm doing and still making one of a kind items!

Meet Lydia Heimbrock from Needle Eye Creations...
I am a Columbus native and have been a crafter for my entire life. Currently, I work at JoAnn's and the Worthington Library. I've been married for a little over a year now. It was my husband who pushed me to start a business from my hobby.
I've been sewing on and off for as long as I can remember. It didn't become a hobby until three years ago, when I received a sewing machine as a Christmas gift. I started selling my stuffed animals at craft bazaars the following holiday season. Since then, I have added some other sewn items to my booth. This will be my first Avant-Garde show!

I'm inspired to create by all of the different fabric and project possibilities. I see something and my mind instantly goes, "how can I make that?" or "how can I make that better?" I love figuring out how to make something and having the satisfaction of saying my items are handmade. In 5 years, I'd like to be successfully selling my items at craft shows and on my own website, and possibly even putting on my own craft show!

Meet the Columbus Crafters!

Meet Lott Carter from Ohio Dynasty...
My name is Lott Carter and I have been in the apparel business for five months. I have two amazing kids and also have 16 years of experience as a middle school math teacher in the Columbus City Schools.
I enjoy making clothes that people love wearing, and that are affordable! I've always been a huge fan of Homage and Lamp Apparel, along with Ohio sports. Originally, my line was called "Third String Dynasty," after the Ohio State football team won a national championship with a third string quarterback. After football season, I transitioned into "Ohio Dynasty."
Ohio Dynasty is apparel for Ohioans. The apparel is super high quality, yet affordable at the same time. I like plain, simple design with super quality garments. I like to sample pieces and pick the softest and highest quality. From there, I try to design something that would fit nicely on each particular piece. This will be Ohio Dynasty's first Avant-Garde event!

Meet Hillary Martin from Hill's Handmade Candles...
I am a chemist by day and a candle-maker by night! I currently work full-time as a scientist. I love my job but I need a creative outlet, too. This may seem strange, as art and science are often painted as opposites, but I can't imagine one without the other. Candle-making has provided me with a way to fulfill my passion for both.
I'm still fresh into the candle-making business! I started my shop in August 2015. This will not only be my first Avant-Garde craft show, but my first craft show ever!
Memories inspire me. I love creating candles that evoke nostalgia in my customers. I particularly love creating flower scented and painted candles. My creative process is quite simple actually. I find a scent that I think sounds delicious, and, if it smells as good as it sounds, I find a fun way to package it.
The message behind my work is relaxation. We are a nation of workaholics, and if my candles can help a person unwind after a long day and take them back to a happy memory, I have done my job.

Meet Kit Aikin from Lincoln Street Design...
Professionally, I am a social scientist. Lincoln Street Design is my creative outlet for jewelry and fiber works. I fabricate Memento Mori and other jewelry using recycled hardware, hammered copper, silver and brass, found objects, natural semi-precious gemstones, and antique portraits.
My jewelry design is self-taught. I wanted something different than the jewelry I was seeing in stores, so I began making my own. I started making jewelry at Oberlin College in 1980's. I stopped for awhile to finish my doctorate in psychology and started back up again in 2010. This will be my fourth Avant-Garde show!

My brain is always full of ideas. I carry a sketchbook with me at all times so I can jot them down. I am especially inspired by the costumes and accessories in old movies, photos, and vintage stores. Because I am using pieces and parts gleaned from a variety of sources, each finished work is one of a kind.
My creative process is a combination of science and spontaneity. I ask myself how seemingly unrelated items might fit together. I am constantly looking for connections, trying to see old things in new ways. The message behind my work is that nothing is too broken or too strange to be beautiful. Everyone deserves a piece of joy.

Fall is Here and the Creativity is Flowing!

Meet Sarah Heatwole of Splendid Antiquities...
I am a 30 year old stay-at-home mom and part-time social worker at a local nursing home. I stay busy taking care of my four year old son and two year old daughter during the day and work in the evenings. I have always been interested in the past and that inspires my work.

I have been crafting and painting since high school. I have always been fascinated by history, the story or memories that each find stirs makes my heart happy. I started collecting vintage items I found at thrift stores, garage sales, and auctions. I opened my Etsy store (Splendid Antiquities) with a few items and have continued to grow it ever since. During the course of this journey, I have also started creating some of my own art, using vintage sewing patterns and the art of decoupage.

This is my First Avant-Garde show, and only my second show all around.  I have worked really hard to build my inventory of handmade items, and come up with new designs all the time

There has always been innate desire inside of me to create; I love the beauty that is found in nature. I also read a lot of blogs and magazines.
Back in April I started a project with sewing patterns. The designing just took off from there. I have found many objects that would have either been thrown out or sat in a thrift store for a long time that I have redone.

People have always told me that I have had talent, but I never really shared that talent until recently. There is something extremely vulnerable about putting your work out there. You just need to be true to what you like as a designer.

My creative process is a little chaotic. When I have a new idea, I sit down with the object and try to envision what it could become in my head. Then I just start cutting little bits of tissue out, and gluing them to the piece. Often the piece takes a different direction than I originally thought.

Although I love working with sewing patterns, I am also branching out into making other items from recycled materials.   I want my business to always bring me joy, if it only remains a small secondary business and brings happiness than that’s where I want to be in five years.  I would eventually love to own my own vintage handmade shop.

I want the world to know that good design can be made from virtually anything; you don’t have to have a lot of money to make your home and surroundings beautiful.  What can seem outdated or ugly can be made new with a little bit of imagination.

Feel free to visit my Etsy Shop at www.etsy.com/shop/splendidantiquities  or follow my blog at www.splendidantiquities.wordpress.com

Meet Jen Walkington from Kiwifruit Designs...
I am relatively new to the Columbus area. We moved here from Madison, WI a year ago. I have been married to my hubby, Jeff, for almost 17 years, and we have two sons, Jackson and Avery. I split my time caring for one of the cutest toddlers on earth and teaching art classes for kiddos at the Worthington and Hilliard Recreation Centers. I LOVE crafting, and also enjoy photography, reading, and creating when and where ever possible.
I have been making crafts for as long as I can remember, but I became "serious" about it four years ago. I needed something to do during those cold Wisconsin winters! This will be my first year doing an Avant Garde show!
Inspiration comes from all over for me, from nature, to surfing the net, to playing with trial and error. What makes crafting fun for me is that process of seeing something unique that makes you excited, to getting your hands "dirty" (so to speak) through experimenting, and coming up with an item that is 100% unique to your imagination. Creating is such a fantastic outlet for me, and has proven to be a hobby that I truly love.
I hope my items provide a fun, carefree message to my customers. I am so fortunate to be able to see the immense amount of talented crafters and artists at crafts fairs each year, and what makes it so exciting is the variety and differences between each table. I tend to make items for kids mostly, since I'm a mom and teacher at heart, and I know from experience that buying a fun item for a child is something special. Since I have two sons of my own, I try to create items thatboys/men can wear, because I see how that's an area (both in stores and in craft fairs) that gets slightly overlooked. But being a girl myself, creating items for women and little girls is really fun as well, since I don't have a girl of my own to dote on!!

Meet Jessica Foust from Trash to Treasures...
I'm 23. I graduated from Ohio State in 2012 with a degree in strategic communications. Now, I work full-time for Nationwide during the week and spend most of my weekends crafting! I sell my crafts at a store in Tuttle Mall called Simply Vague which keeps me pretty busy!
I'm an avid runner. I love half-marathons and 5K's! I'm obsessed with my dog. His name is Teejay and he is a wire-haired dachshund. He is a rescue that came from an animal hoarding situation and I'm so glad I got to adopt him! He keeps me company while I craft!

I've been crafting since I was in high school. Both my grandma and mom are super creative. I'd like to think I get my creative genes from them. Although I always liked to craft, I didn't really start selling anything professionally until I was a freshman in college. I started making purses out of Capri Sun pouches, which taught me a lot about sewing. From there, I started taking on other "upcycled" crafts, such as wine bottle lamps, bottle cap jewelry and magnets, and painted utensil holders out of jars. I started selling these at a flea market in Andover, Ohio, and just kept going since then.
I'm inspired by everything. Not kidding. I'm constantly thinking of ways items can be repurposed or created into something else. Lately, I've been getting into refurbishing furniture. I'll find old furniture at thrift stores or yard sales and turn it into something beautiful.

I've always been encouraged to be creative and think outside the box. I have my parents to thank for that. Specifically for string art, I made a big Ohio piece for my living room and never thought much of it until people started commenting on how much they liked it when I would have company over. I had a few people ask me to make them one here and there. It really took off when my mom found Simply Vague at the Tuttle Mall. She brought me in one night and I showed a picture of my work to the owner who offered me a space to sell on the spot. Who would've thought that a weekend project would turn into that?
I'm constantly in "create mode." Even when I'm sitting behind a desk at work, my mind is always turning about how I can make my work better or more unique. I refuse to see anything as one-dimensional because I believe everything has more than one use. I bounce ideas off anyone who will listen and give me feedback.

My Etsy store is located here.
