 Meet John Huenemann from Brackett's Wooden Games...

Hi, I'm John (aka Brackett)! I've been woodworking for about four years, and I am passionate about art, music, gaming, and my amazing, wonderful family. 

This is my first time at an Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show. I'm inspired by vintage and historical aesthetics, and mentally challenging puzzles. 

My creative process is 100% ADHD-fueled chaos- I look up records of ancient and vintage board games, puzzles, and toys, and recreate them with a modern look. 

In five years, I hope to have expanded my product line, and found more ways to create and play. I hope my work gives people a chance to connect to the past while enjoying the present. 

Meet Greg and Pamela Feldman from G&P Fine Craftory...

G & P Fine Craftory is the husband and wife collaboration between Greg and Pamela Feldman-Hill. We live in central Ohio, and we have always been “makers.” Greg is an ex-IT Manager who took up woodworking as a hobby in 2016, and has since turned this into a full-time business. He enjoys doing built-in bookcases for clients, custom charcuterie and cutting boards for gifts, and laser cut trivets and other items. Pamela is a professionally trained artist who has created artwork and illuminated manuscripts for clients all over the world for over 45 years. Hand painting ceramics and wood cut outs, including hamsas and cat shapes, and mandala-inspired coasters and trays are her meditation and passion. Pamela and Greg often collaborate on various products and designs. Our goal with the products at G & P Fine Craftory is to bring beautiful creations into daily life with fine craftsmanship and joy. Greg has been woodworking for 8 years, and Pamela has been creating art professionally since the 1970’s. Our collaboration with G & P Fine Craftory was born in 2021.

This is our fourth year participating in Avant-Garde shows.

What inspires us to create.. adding beauty to our daily lives while we keep our hands and minds busy definitely motivates us to create!

 

How we got into our craft.. Greg started woodworking as a hobby after refinishing some tables and cabinets for our house and discovering that he enjoyed working with wood. After he retired from Nationwide Insurance as an IT manager, he decided to pursue this passion full time, and converted our garage into a full wood-shop, with a CnC and laser machines. Pamela has always painted, and began hand-painting ceramics and wood cut-outs about 10 years ago as a way to fill time between her illuminated manuscript commissions. Creating work that is functional and smaller provided a nice outlet, and utilizes her love and knowledge of pattern and color in a new way. 

 

Meet Jennifer Roberts from Imperfecting Art..

I’m a playwright and self-taught artist from the SF Bay Area. I moved to Columbus last March and am having fun adjusting to the weather and discovering the art scene here. 

I started working in mixed media and clay six later in life, six years ago.

I’m inspired by dichotomy. The transitory nature of balance I'd experienced for most of my life made me keenly aware of the tension created between seemingly incompatible ideas trying to dominate space at the expense of the other: nature and human; body and mind; creation and destruction.

It's the investigation on how we can achieve equilibrium between  oppositions that fascinates me. I want us to witness the beauty that comes in the textures of decay, see the dichotomy and harmony of nature and human, science and superstition… These are only a few contradictions I want to investigate. 

I’d been doing some art writing for a local gallery and was inspired to finally follow my dream of creating art and storytelling in a new, visual medium. My grandfather was an artist and I’ve always wanted to express myself visually. That’s why I was also drawn to playwriting. It was scary to jump over to art, but was inspired by the quote by George Eliot, “You’re never too old to be what you might have been.”

That’s a tough question. I think I didn’t think about being talented until I was accepted into two online gallery shows and published in their catalogue. It was only then that I thought I may be on to something. There can be a stigma associated with self-taught artists who didn’t do traditional study. A lot of that questioning and lack of confidence came from this feeling that I didn’t belong, so it did take the validation of having my work shown to accept the term “artist.” Though looking back, I don’t believe having work in a gallery makes you more of an artists and if you are creating work, you are one.

My creative process.. I go into what I call, “sprints.” I have periods of time where I am in the studio morning to evening every day. Then, I crash. I use the downtime to take a class or work in my art journal and looking at art for inspiration.

In five years, I’d like to be a professional artist, meaning that I can support myself to some degree and take commissions on a regular basis. I don’t see owning a storefront, etc. but I would love to expand my studio.

 I leave messages about my work to the viewer. I know what I’m looking for or exploring when I make it, but I want the viewer to look and interpret what they see however they wish.

Meet Cinnamon McKinley from Mandala Madra...

My name is Cinnamon McKinley, but I also go by "Smee". I'm originally from the East Coast - I grew up in Trenton, NJ. I moved here to the Columbus area with my family in the fall of 2023, and I have absolutely fallen in love with this city. I am an x-ray tech by trade and the mother of two beautiful neurodivergent teenage boys. We're all animal lovers - we have three dogs, three cats, and a hermit crab at home. We relax together by taking long nature walks or strolls around the neighborhood. I am a bird enthusiast and love listening to their songs while we walk.

 

I've been creating essential oil rollerballs and sprays for myself, family, and friends for several years now. However, it only just dawned on me to try to sell my wares over a year ago. I'm very proud of my recipes, and am constantly tweaking and improving them. This will be my third Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show. They really are so much fun.

 

I am inspired by a need to spread Self Love, and the relief of ailments that may get in the way of that Self Love.

 

My first essential oil creation was my Migraine Relief rollerball. I suffer from frequent migraines and was looking for a more natural way to combat that pain and pressure without adding more (or less) caffeine. I did my research, created a recipe and tried it out on myself. I found that it helped considerably, and I wanted to branch out into relief of other ailments. I now have rollerballs and sprays that help with menstrual symptoms, perimenopausal symptoms, insomnia, and anxiety. My favorite scent is my Love rollerball, which promotes Self Love and ease within one's own skin. 

I describe my creative process and Meditative and Magical. My goal for five years.. I'm hoping that within five years' time, I gain enough momentum to work on my recipes and sell my products full time, while taking x-rays becomes a part time gig. That's my dream.

 

My work is all about Love - Self-Love, Love of others, Love of community. I am hoping to do nothing more than spread Love and relief.

Columbus, Let’s get it started!

Meet Jillian Renee from Jillian Renee Art…

My name is Jillian, I've been making art and crafting my entire life, but over the past few years I've realized how unfulfilled I was in my career and have been transitioning into making art my full time focus. I live in Columbus, Ohio with my partner and our two cats. Ever since I could hold a crayon I've been making art. 

Every day I'm reminded of the beauty and simplicity of my childhood and seeing life through the eyes of my inner child and allowing myself the freedom to play. I create art that is bold, bright and whimsical and always work to cultivate joy in whatever I create.  An innate drive to create. My hands always need to be fiddling with something so I've dabbled in almost every kind of craft over the years (pottery, glasswork, woodburning, yarn spinning, etc.) but have always come back to painting. In a world that is constantly chaotic, painting is a time that I'm able to be myself and quiet my mind.

My aunts and uncles are artists and always encouraged me to play when it came to art. When I was 6 I recall sitting down in front of a still life my aunt set up.. now as an adult I have that very still life framed in my kitchen. I don't remember a time in my life when I wasn't creating.  My creative process is seeking joy and allowing myself the freedom to play.  Most of my paintings are done without reference photos and are simply created from my intuition.  Within the next 5 years I will be building my audience and expanding my work into galleries outside of Ohio and will be launching my first solo exhibition. 

Meet Alexa Szczepanski…

I am a cat mom to a sweet little bean named Jonas, and am a plant mom to many houseplants. I really enjoy spending as much of my time outdoors as I possibly can, going for trail walks and longer hikes. As of recently I also enjoy trail running! My partner and I just ran the Autumn. Squatch 10k and it was a blast. I cook for work, and have intermittently been involved with mental health advocacy throughout the last eight years or so. I went to undergraduate for psychology and intended to become a mental health therapist, but I have decided to take a step away from the field to give care to myself. 

I made art a lot when I was young, art classes were always my favorite whether in elementary, middle, or highschool. My first real dream was to become a professional artist and while that is no longer my dream, I am glad to be creating again. I took a break from art towards the end of my highschool years and didn't do much creatively in college unless it was required of me for a project that I did. I didn't really start to delve back into making art until this past March. 

My actual art itself is definitely inspired by the nature and life around me - plants, insects, animals, all of those things interacting with each other. What inspires the art making process for me though, is my own healing. Making art is soothing to me, it's meditative for me. It is a time when I can just sit and be quietly present with myself, and I tend to gravitate more towards my art when I am feeling heavier because it's a space for me to hold myself in. It's a very intimate and nurturing process for me.  I think I've always been into the craft hobby, but not formally. I don't think I ever outgrew that creative exploration that we all have when we're kids, I really enjoy the process of making cool things with the materials I have on hand which usually results in multimedia arts and crafts. 

I would say that there was never really a moment in time where I felt that I was all that talented. When I make art, it is always one of those things for me where I cannot tell how it will land for others - if they will enjoy it, if they will feel neutral about it, or if they just won't like it but I don't really make art for other people anymore. As in, it is no longer my intention to please others with what I create which is really important to me. 

When I started making art back in March though, was when I first really started to enjoy what I was making and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I'd let go of the attachment to what others might think and I just started creating for the sake of creating.  

I have no real consistent creative process. Usually I see something out in the world that I really enjoy, which leads to an interest in trying to paint that thing, or paint something that captures the feeling of that experience for me. And then I paint it! I joke with my partner sometimes because no matter what I am creating, halfway through I always have this moment of thinking to myself "oh man, I don't know if I'm going to like this or not." And that used to be what stopped me from finishing pieces when I was younger, I would have that thought and assume that it just wasn't going to turn out good. So I would never finish it, but now I challenge myself to finish every piece even if I'm unsure of the vision, and I always end up really enjoying them. 

As I mentioned too, I tend to gravitate more towards art making when I am needing extra care.   I may eventually offer the opportunity to create custom pieces for people, but I do not ever plan to turn my artwork into a business. I will definitely be participating in more craft fairs as I have the opportunity to, but I've learned that it's really difficult for me to do the things that I really enjoy doing all the time. Anytime I have pursued my personal interests beyond just hobbies, it has led to me working too hard or burning myself out and who knows! It may be different with art, it has been different so far with cooking. I have two jobs that require kitchen work for me and cooking is something that I really enjoy, and it definitely sometimes takes away momentum from cooking at home because after working on my feet for so long in a hot kitchen, the last place I want to be is another hot kitchen. But, I still really enjoy cooking. 

Many of my pieces do not have a specific message, but I think the intention that I sit with whenever I am making art is to just enjoy living. I struggled with my mental health consistently for a long time as an adolescent and early in young adulthood, and I was constantly seeking some deeper meaning in life in order to give myself some sense of fulfillment. But this past year especially, I've realized that I do not need a meaning in order to be content with my life. My joy is present regardless of whether there are difficult days or difficult things happening in the world; my joy exists alongside lots and lots of grief. And it is all a part of being alive. Lots of my artwork includes mantras or affirmations that I've found for myself during those moments of deep grieving, of gratitude, of forgiveness and acceptance. 

Meet Jennifer White from JAWS Woodwork…

My name is Jenn White and I love wood. More specifically, I love

 the possibilities of crafting with wood. I have a simple operation: me, a few tools, and endless options to create. If it can be made with wood, I'm going to do it. I have been doing this for only about three years. Woodworking started out as a simple hobby but quickly became my passion. I can always be found in the garage making a lot of saw dust.

This will be my first Avant-Garde Art and Craft Show and it is my

 first show of any kind. I'm very excited to share space with other amazing crafters.  The world around me inspires me to create. Everything I see, I think about how I can make it out of wood or incorporate wood. Making things that matter to me and others also inspires me. There is a different, wonderful kind of value to something when it's handmade. 

Woodworking started as my hobby during the quarantine times of covid.With no where to go or anything to do but be at home, I had to find something to fill my time. I read an article about woodworking and decided that is what I wanted to try because it incorporated so many elements I enjoy. Little did I know where it would take me. I really think I found woodworking by chance. I’ve always had a creative side, love to figure out how things work and love building things (thanks to years of playing with Legos as a kid). Woodworking pulls together all of these for me and I was hooked from the beginning when I was given my first saw as a gift. I still use that loyal jig saw to make all the detail cuts in my work.

I would describe my creative process as dependent on how I feel at the moment. I do like to start with a plan, drawing it out on my graph paper, a few cuts to start, but as a project starts to come together, that's when I can really see what it will eventually become.  In five years I hope to see my hobby become more of a full time business.

    

The message behind my work is that the thoughtfulness, quality and uniqueness of handcrafted items is the best way to add personality to one's home and life. The attention to detail that goes into every piece for a person makes it so much more meaningful. 

Meet Dani Phillip…

I am fortunate to live and travel to different countries on different continents.   Each place I call home for a while, or I visit, is a part of me as I try to capture their energy and emotions they stirr within my art works.  Years and years,  I dabbled using different media as a teenager.   Art is a big part of my life.  A place, a time, an emotion.   Each moment, fleeting as it may be, worth remembering and sharing with the world.

My father, being an artist himself, for starters.  And meeting and being friends with great artists.  I was told I am creative and talented since high school, and I just tried to express myself using different media.  It starts with an emotion, a memory of a place and a time.  I try to capture the essence of this emotion, in a simple, minimalistic way. Art is such an inspiration for all of us, even if we don't realize it at times.   Art gives personality to our spaces and makes our lives better.   I am humbled and grateful to have my art welcomed into people's homes and lives, around the world.  Art is a two way street.   It is not only about what I feel when I am creating it, but more importantly about what you feel when I am sharing it with you.   My art is an invitation to daydream with me for a moment, and forget about everything else.   Are you inspired?   Then my work is done.

It's Show Time!

Meet Stacy Piper of Middle School Chaos...

I've been a middle school teacher for 29 years and have been crafting for almost that long. I've worked with papercrafts, vinyl, coasters, t-shirts, stickers, tumblers, and 3D layered shadow boxes. I make most of the decor in my classroom! 

This will be my 3^rd Avant-Garde Show and I've enjoyed talking to the many people who have come through. I use my crafting as a way to de-stress from the craziness of middle school.

How I got started.. I originally started creating scrapbooks for my two children who are now grown and now am focused on the layered paper shadow boxes. 

I love to create things that make other people smile. That's my motivation. I look forward to doing this full-time after I retire from the classroom. 

Meet Jaclyn Hamilton of Jaclyn Hamilton Fine Arts ...

I’m a graduate of Kansas City Art Institute with a bachelors in painting. My painted glassware is sold internationally, and this will be my first Avant-Garde craft show. I love painting on glass- I’ve been painting glassware for 24 years.

How I got started.. I painted my first glasses as a Christmas gift for my mom. I opened an Etsy shop a few years later. In college I worked in a gift shop and an artist brought in painted glassware to sell. I was so inspired I started painting on glass myself.

What inspires me.. When I'm creating a new piece, I’m inspired by the individual glass, its shape and structure.

My five year plan.. In the next five years, I see myself selling at lots of craft fairs. The message behind my work is that I hope that my work inspires people to enjoy the little things in life. 

Meet Paula White of Simply Crafted LLC...

I am a retired Education professor who has dabbled in arts and crafts for years. I’ve never had any formal training in the arts, but have experimented with a variety of art forms over the years. I consider myself a self-taught artist who has finally found the medium that brings me joy; I love to design functional and decorative art with epoxy resin. This will be my first time participating in an Avant-Garde Art & Craft show.

I began experimenting with and creating resin art in 2018, but I only recently began selling my art. Prior to working with resin, I expressed my creativity by making candles, and through drawing. I use my many photos of the ocean as inspiration for my coastal resin art pieces. I also find inspiration in being from central Ohio, thus, many of my pieces are scarlet and gray. Also, the fluidness of resin is itself inspiring. Since resin is self-leveling the motion makes for unique pieces which keeps me inspired and passionate about working with resin.

How I got into my craft.. I got into crafting because I needed a way to express my creativity and use the right side of my brain. I spent many years teaching math to middle schoolers and then teaching education students the art of teaching math. I was initially drawn to resin “beach art” due to my love of the ocean. I discovered my talent rather accidentally. In general, I have a good sense of color and when working with resin, I get to mix my own colors. Plus, the fluidness of resin is a good mix for my current skills as an artist.

My creative process is one of visualization and then experimentation. I first visualize a piece and then I set about creating my vision. It is thrilling when my vision and experimentation align. I want my resin art to bring joy to people and their homes. I want my resin art to tell the story of who the customer is through the colors and designs they choose.

My goal in the next five years is that I hope to be selling my resin art in small shops that carry handcrafted items!

Columbus Fall Vendor Shopping, Right Around the Corner!

Meet Marisa Samuel from Risa's Creative Market... 

Hi, my name is Marisa Samuel. I am the owner/creator of Risa’s Creative Market. I created my craft business because I love to make home decor, gifts, and accessories. I love to learn new techniques and try them out. Of course, I can’t keep all of my creations, so I started gifting them to my family. They loved them so much I started to give gifts to others and created my craft shop.

I've been creating since 2019, I opened my etsy shop in that summer. This will be my first Avant-Garde Show.

The world around me inspires my creations. I love to travel and see the “color palettes” all over the world, especially in nature. I’ve always liked to craft and learned different crafts from family and acquaintances. My grandma taught me to crochet when I was seven years old, my mom always had a sewing machine, and my stepmom taught me scrapbooking. I grew up around very talented women, and grew to enjoy crafting myself.

How I discovered my talent.. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t like to be creative, I’ve just always loved to make things with my hands. Friends would ask me to help them with creative projects and tell me how crafty I am. I’m sure most crafty people can relate when I say my family thinks I can make anything! They challenge me often and I happily accept!

 

My creative process can be long! I usually need to write out a plan, a little procrastination and research, then I get to work! My family plays a big part in this by keeping me company. They bounce ideas at me and give me feedback. 

My five year plan.. I really enjoy my business as a hobby. It makes me smile to make others smile. Hopefully, I can add some of my items to a store on consignment, or grow my online business. I also look forward to doing more vendor shows to interact with customers.

The message behind my work.. I want young women to be encouraged to live their dreams! Start that business! Be your own boss! 

Meet Pamela and Greg Feldman-Hill from G & P Fine Craftory...

G & P Fine Craftory is a husband and wife collaboration between Greg and Pamela Feldman-Hill. We've been married 35 years (‼) and have a daughter, a soon-to-be son-in-law, and two cats. We live in central Ohio, and we have always been “makers.” Greg is an ex-IT Manager who took up woodworking as a hobby in 2016, and turned this into a full-time business when he found himself unemployed due to the pandemic. Pamela is a professionally trained artist who has been self-employed creating artwork and illuminated manuscripts for clients throughout the world for over 40 years. 

Greg has been woodworking for six years, and Pamela has been creating art professionally since 1983. Our collaboration with G & P Fine Craftory was born in 2021 as a response to Greg’s layoff during the pandemic. This is our first Avant-Garde show as exhibitors, though we have participated in several over the past few years as visitors!

What inspires us to create... Adding beauty to our daily lives while we keep our hands and minds busy definitely motivates us to create! While we each “do our own thing,” we also enjoy collaborating on projects that incorporate Greg’s wood craft with Pamela’s painting skills, such as the vanity trays that we create together.

His work as an IT manager ended during the pandemic with a lay-off, so he decided to pursue this passion full time. Pamela began hand-painting finished ceramics and tiles as a way to fill time in her studio between her larger commissions. Creating work that was functional and smaller provided a nice outlet, and utilized her love and knowledge of pattern and color in a new way. 

Pamela has been creating artworks since childhood and pursued this passion in college, achieving a BFA in General Fine Arts and an MA in Printmaking. Greg discovered his love of wood working after tackling some home refinishing projects. He joined the Idea Foundry Makerspace in Columbus, took some woodworking classes, and continues to learn his craft through self-study and experimentation.

Our process.. Greg is very methodical, prepping his materials and planning out exactly what he wants to make using computer and design tools, making measurements down to the centimeter. Pamela usually sits down with a wood cut-out or mug, allows it speak to her for bit, and then she just starts painting!

Our five year goal.. We would like to continue doing art fairs and acquiring regular customers to our on-line store. Our products are geared towards gifts, so eventually we hope to get many returning customers and some professional connections for on-going orders.

The message behind our work.. Fine craftsmanship and bringing beautiful creations to daily life.

Meet Mindy Brown from Cambridge Road Crafts...

Hello, my name is Melinda and I am the owner of Cambridge Road Crafts. I am the mother of four boys and a part-time dental hygienist of 20 years. My husband, Ben, and I live in central Ohio and enjoy local sports, traveling, and spending time with our boys. In the past couple of years, I’ve discovered the joy of crafting. 

The Fall Avant-Garde show will be my first craft show and I am really looking forward to it! 

I’ve always enjoyed creating and crafting, but it didn’t really become a passion of mine until just recently. In October 2019, my oldest son passed away, and in an attempt to distract myself from the grief and regain some of my sanity, I starting crafting…..all…..the…..time. I knew if I was going to continue with this hobby long-term, I was going to have to sell my creations. And so, Cambridge Road Crafts was born. 

        

    

Although I enjoy making several different kinds of crafts, primitives are my favorite. I love working with homespun and vintage fabrics to create one of a kind, primitive pieces. I especially enjoy designing holiday inspired home decor that has a touch of rustic farmhouse and a touch of old- fashioned Americana charm. 

Seasonal primitive dolls are my favorite to create! Each one is cut and sewn from muslin fabric, stained, painted and sanded, with a unique hand sewn face and custom-made clothes.  I love bringing them to life! Each rag doll is completely one of a kind and is given a proper name that suits them. I hope you’ll stop by and see them at the show!

             

Meet Jana Kosir from Jana Kosir Art...

My name is Jana Kosir, I am a self-taught artist from Columbus, Ohio. I’m a member of the queer and disabled communities and an avid lover of all things nature. 

I have been making art compulsively my entire life, but I started doing art markets in May of this year.

Although being an artist professionally has always been my dream, I made the jump this year out of necessity. I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, a severe sleep and neurological disorder, in late 2021 after a year of being unable to work. I was sleeping for 18 hours a day and I didn’t know why. I am being treated, but my options are limited so I’m still not able to work full-time in the traditional sense. Being my own boss gives me the freedom to choose my own schedule and take naps when I need to, which has completely turned my life around.

This is my very first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show!

I draw inspiration from my local wildlife, and my personal experiences with chronic illness. Art is how I process and work through struggles, and how I reconnect with my core self. Part of the reason I share my work is to show other people like me that there is a place for them in this world, even if it's a less traditional one, which I think can be even better.

If there was a specific occasion that inspired me to be creative, I was too young to retain the memory. To my knowledge it’s just something I’ve always done. When I was 8 I started making jewelry, I still make it for my sister (with the same pliers!) As I got older I was drawn more towards sculpting and painting, which are my primary mediums today. 

My childhood home had a creek and a small patch of woods just past our backyard. Most of my happy childhood memories are of exploring this little piece of Ohio wildlife. That land served as a place for me to escape to when things were bad, and as a place to cultivate a sense of passion and wonder for life. Those feelings are what I strive to replicate in my artwork, and invoke in each viewer.

When people look at my darker pieces they see themselves and the things that they have survived. They know they are not alone. When they look at my lighter work, namely animal portraits and surrealist pieces, they see beauty and feel wonder. The message behind all of my work is that no matter what you are feeling, there are people out there who understand you, and no matter how all consuming the bad parts of life feel, there are wondrous things waiting to be found when you're ready.

I’ve always wanted to be an artist, and when I was in elementary school I realized I was really bad at drawing, so I decided to start drawing something every day. Thankfully, I got better over time and that skill has transferred over into many other mediums. 

My creative process is chaotic. I start with a vague concept or mental image, then I make a sloppy outline sketch on whatever paper I can get my hands on the fastest. After that, I spend some time considering which medium will be the best suited to express my idea; then, if needed, I’ll collect some reference photos and get started. From there it's left entirely up to chance whether the finished piece looks anything like I initially pictured, I tend to deviate from my plans often.

In 5 years I hope to have at least one artist residency under my belt, and to be making enough money to have a studio to work out of. Both of these things would allow me to explore different mediums I haven’t had the chance to previously, and I’m always looking for new ways to be creative. I also believe that I will continue to do art markets on a regular basis and continue to grow my online audience.
