Coming To You Soon Columbus!

Meet Chelsea Nutto from CaffeinatedTails...
Hi everyone! My name is Chelsea and I am the owner of CaffeinatedTails! I currently live in Columbus. This is my first Avant-Garde show and will be my 2nd event I’ll have sold at so far! Born and raised in southwest Michigan, I have grown up with a crafty mother who encouraged me to explore many creative fields such as sewing, baking, scrap booking, jewelry, and much more. So naturally, I was crafty. My creativity also spans as a musician (alumna of Capital University, BM degree in Flute Performance) and as a cos-player of five years.
I am inspired to create from different sources; I like making fandom related tails (as a nod to the cos-player side of things) as well as making semi-realistic (and non realistic) animal type/colored tails. Sometimes, color combos and even foods can be inspirations for me! As for how I came across making tails...I actually have to thank Instagram and Google for inspiring and giving me tutorials as I had originally learned to make tails for my own costumes but then decided to create commissions for others before just making it a hobby sort of shop on Etsy. This has been a major hobby for about 1 year now. My message behind my work...is that life is too short not to explore and express yourself!

Meet Sandy Stamey from The Vintage...
Hi, I'm Sandy Stamey! I come from a large family, born in Iowa, raised in Illinois, and moved to Ohio 46 years ago. I currently live in Newark, Ohio and own a Vintage Shoppe. "The Vintage" is an Eclectic mix of Antiques and Unique items, as well as shabby-chic, rustic, and one of a kind finds. I've been crafting for over 30 years, and I'm excited to participate in my first Avant-Garde Art and craft Show!
I enjoy bringing new life to old furniture by refurbishing and painting. Vintage Fabrics inspire me to create vintage-style crafts, and there are always new ideas waiting to be created. I enjoy creating items that bring joy to others, and excepting the challenges along the way. Thank you to Becki for the opportunity to Participate in the Avant-Garde Show!

Meet Julia Swartzel from LuAu Design...
I am a middle school teacher by day and have been teaching for 10 years. I have been married to my best friend for 11 years and we have two sweet and funny girls, ages 7 & 5. My business name comes from my girl's names put together, Lu[cy] and Au[drey]. I love spending time with my family, traveling the world, and watching sports, especially Buckeyes football!
LuAu Design Co is now10 months old! I have not been a previous Avant-Garde show, but I am looking forward to participating in my very first one on September 9th! I have always loved making things for people and giving others gifts. I feel honored at the opportunity to create a product that starts as an idea in a client's mind and then be able to bring it to life.
I started creating and designing items for my daughter's birthday parties. I always looked forward to creating party decorations and favor bags around a theme for each one of their birthdays. My family and friends started asking me to create and make things for them, so I soon realized that I had the ability to start a business. My mind is constantly thinking about different product ideas. I use things around me to help inspire and launch a product idea. I am a perfectionist, so some ideas take longer than others. Continuing to bring custom and personalized products across the country. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and made with great care. My hope is that it will bring you joy and I am honored to be able to create each and every product!

Meet Joyce Dorn from Jewelry Designs by JoyD...
My name is Joyce Dorn and my business name is Jewelry Designs by JoyD. I have been creating jewelry for more than 10 years. I have also taken other classes at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center and from local Bead stores and workshops in and out of Ohio to learn more and get better at my craft of metalsmithing and enameling.
I have participated in several shows with Avant-Garde, and I like that I see the returning customers at the shows, as well as greeting new people and helping them make their jewelry choices! It helps me improve my design choices and see what customers are looking for. I have altered pieces to so they have the best fit for them. So, I guess you could say my customers inspire me to create and continue to learn.

My creative process is based on what I have learned, and I check out magazines and pictures, even the coloring books looking at drawings or that “spark”. I don’t copy; I create my version. I have jewelry mentors – people that inspire me with their styles – I don’t copy them but they create my desire to do better!

In five years I hope I can say I have a customer base that I can cater to, and hope that I can attend more workshops to continue learning. I like the rustic in my designs, and I like working with the copper and silver metal and wire components. If there is a message to be learned I would say it would be to continue to learn and find new methods of creating. Be true to yourself and your craft!

It's Almost Showtime, Columbus!

Meet Lydia Heimbrock from Needle Eye Creations...
Hi! I'm a Columbus native but I recently moved to Loveland. I've been a crafter my entire life and currently work as a part time manager at JoAnn's Fabrics. I've been sewing off and on for as long as I can remember, but it didn't become a hobby until three years ago. I've been married for almost two years now, and it was my husband who pushed me to start a business from my hobby. This will be my third Avant-Garde Show this year!
I'm inspired to create by all of the different fabric and project possibilities. I see something and my mind instantly goes to figuring out how I can make it, or how I can make it even better. I love figuring out the problem of how to make something and then being able to say that my items are handmade.
I started crafting at a young age and it has always been a part of me. People always seem to like and appreciate what I make. I create things for the enjoyment of others and for my enjoyment as well!

Meet David Monteith from Dejected Steel...
I'm David and I used to work in the roofing industry installing standing seam metal roofs. After working with the sheet metal for a few years, I started using the unused scrap metal from work for some of my first pieces. Not only is this my first Avant-Garde Show, but this is my first art show ever!
I've always been creative, and while I was working in roofing, I discovered that I enjoy using sheet metal as an artistic medium. After I decide what the subject matter of my piece is, I cut out different shapes of steel and layer them to create the finished product.
I hope to eventually dedicate myself to my artwork full time. The message of my work is open to interpretation by the viewer.

Meet Kathleen Modory from A Moment for Mom...
Hi! I'm Kathleen and I'm married with a two-year-old son. I live in Medina, Ohio, and work as a medical coder during the week. I have only been making bath products for a few months, and this will be my first Avant-Garde Show!
As a working mom of a two-year-old, the bathtub was the only place to be alone with just me! I was buying a ton of bath bombs then thought that I should make them myself so I get exactly the scents and colors I want. I love to try new things with my bath products. I see things in every day life and think of ways to make bath bombs that look like ordinary things.
In five years I hope to still be doing craft fairs every weekend. It's a nice thing to do with my husband! We get to spend time together as a family and get to know the people in our community. The message behind my work is take the time to slow down and put you first! Everyone needs a moment for themselves!

Meet Nettie Pyne from Pyne Pysanky...
Hi! I'm Nettie and my full time job is at Nationwide Children's Hospital in the Research Institute. I am also a black belt in taekwondo, and spend a good deal of time training and teaching children's classes! With the little free time I have left, I make Pysanka, an ancient Ukrainian art form that uses wax-resistant methods to create intricate designs on eggshells. This will be my first Avant-Garde Show!
I first learned about Pysanka in a high school Fiber Arts class. We did a two-week unit on Pysanka, and I completely fell in love with it. I begged my parents for a beginner's kit, and they obliged by getting me one for Christmas! I've never looked back! As soon as I started, I discovered I had some natural skill for the art form. My attention to detail and patience with repetitive tasks really lend themselves well to the art.
I think the overall message behind my work is that you can find great beauty in places you wouldn't normally expect. Each egg also contains significant symbolism. Every color, pattern, curl, or animal design can mean something, so whenever I make one as a gift or am designing a custom order, I try to make an egg that symbolizes how I see that person or what wishes and blessings I want to offer them.

Meet Susan Stein from Jewelry by Susan...
I'm Susan and I'm a 64-year-old wife, grandmother, and retired teacher from the Columbus City Schools. My first priority in life is to my husband and our 10 grandchildren! My best times are being with my family and friends. All of these things make me one lucky lady! Recently, I have added jewelry making to my perfect life!
As a teacher for 30 years, I had to be creative in my teaching style to accommodate the students in my class. This was more controlled creativity, but when I retired, I didn't have anything holding me back! I was introduced to jewelry making from a friend and knew it was perfect for me!
As the same with most creative endeavors, you start with what you are comfortable with and then improvise from there. I found out that my signature style is using large, bold stones or beads. My process is just trial and error. My jewelry is reasonably priced so my customers can own several pieces and choose one to wear that fits their mood and makes what they are wearing pop!

Meet Courtney Talbott from Pink Sprinkles Plush...
My name is Courtney Talbott and I'm a mom and wife living if rural central Ohio.  I love all things odd and unique, I'm particularly fond of bugs, anything Halloween/horror and of course monsters of all sorts. I started Pink Sprinkles Plush in 2008 as a hobby.
What inspires me... At a very young age my paternal Grandma started me on crafts and I haven't stopped since.  I love making things with my own two hands. I've always loved stuffed animals, especially unusual or overly cute plush.  I had the idea for monsters with long arms and legs and sticky pad fasteners.  With the help of my Aunt, I learned to use my sewing machine which had been gathering dust for years and Pink Sprinkles Monsters were born.

How I discovered my talent... It was more practice than anything.  The first monsters did not look anything like what I make now.  It was all trial and error and a lot of patience. When it comes to my creative process, I let the fabrics inspire which monster/plush I'll create next. I cut them all in small batches, hand paint their eyes and hand embroider their faces.

The message behind my work... Be unique, be creative, have fun, stuffed animals are for all ages.  If they make you smile, I've done my job.

Meet Shelley Harding and Courtney Harding from Serving with Style...
The name of our business is : Serving with Style - the owners are: Shelley Harding & Courtney Harding - mother and daughter, Sharlene Neumann- Courtney's soon to be mother in law. We are from Mansfield/Galion Ohio. We love just having fun creating our beaded silverware and hanging out together.
Our favorite part about what we do is we love the silverware when it is done, it is both beautiful and useful.  Everywhere we take them people fall in love with them We got started in the business because we have always enjoyed going to craft shows! After buying some sets of beaded silverware we decided we could do this ourselves! One day, we just sat down and tried it, and decided we were having a ball being together and creating!
What is unique about our business is that each piece is individual, we just start putting pieces together and when it looks right we go with it.!

The message behind our work is simply that we hope that people will enjoy them as we do. Our pieces make wonderful, holiday, wedding, hostess and "just because" gifts.

Meet Abby Dicken from Never Ends..
My name is Abby, I'm 16 years old, and I'm from Columbus, Ohio! I am half-Japanese and American. I have been playing piano for 8 years, and have been in choir for 5 years(through middle school and high school). I have gone to Japan 7 times and will be going for my 8th time next year! I have been drawing since I was very little, but I have been doing stippling/dotwork since March of last year.

Something interesting about my work/myself... I want to become a tattoo artist when I'm older, so I sort of challenge myself to try and do "tattoo designs" of my own. Whenever I want to draw something, I always include stippling/dotwork, which sometimes can be a bit challenging, but I like a bit of a challenge. How I discovered my talent.. When I got into dotwork, it was when I started liking a band called Bring Me the Horizon. The frontman's wife, Hannah Sykes, is a tattoo artist that does dotwork, like what I've been doing. I looked through her account on Instagram which was (and still is) filled with her artwork and tattoos, and I became inspired to do dot work.

My creative process... Before I draw something, I think about what I want to draw and how I want to start it off, either freehand or with a pencil. Next, I look up pictures for reference. Then, I start stippling/drawing a certain part of the drawing, and keep on creating whatever comes to mind. Then, (if I used a pencil), I start tracing the marks with an inked pen. After that, I start stippling the parts that I want to stipple in. Lastly, I erase all of the pencil marks and look through every detail of my artwork. If there's something missing, like a line or a part where I didn't stipple enough, I'll add it in. Then I'll look through it again and when everything seems "perfect," I'll call it a finished piece.

My five year goal... Hopefully, I will be able to see myself happily working in my dream career with the people that support me with what I do. The message differs within my artwork. Some might tell a story, others are there to simply show what I want to show!

Meet Michelle Hirsch from Michelle's Glass Work...
Hi, I’m Michelle Hirsch, a Wife,  Mother of two young adults, teacher, and small business owner! I am a Family Consumer Science Teacher (Home Ec.) for over 30 years.  I have always enjoyed creating:  from redesigning wedding gowns, cooking and my Kiln work .
How I got into my craft.. My Mother and her Aunt were very crafty so I think my love for being around this ladies soaked into my being.

My kiln work as evolved over the years from recycle/reuse wine bottles into glass fusing made into custom coaster/platters along with jewelry. I love colors and trying new things!

Meet Tami Bevins from Untapped Love...
UNTAPPED LOVE-"TAPPING INTO THE LOVE AND BEAUTY THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER"

We are 2 sisters (one living in Ohio, one living in Peru) who wanted to be able to help marginalized people (specifically women) around the world. Our goal is to create an outlet for these women to not only show the world their artistic talents, but also create job opportunities.

We have been doing this now for approximately one year but in different capacities ranging from research, "on the ground" creation of new concepts, designs and ideas, to building partnerships with rural communities. This started with one of the sisters constant love of travel and also working to support fair trade practices and wanting to do more to help these communities in need.
What inspires us to create, is the women we work with and the families they support, the unique and creative talents they hold, and the constant drive to help others achieve their dreams. Also...we love worldly fashions so this is FUN for us!

Our talents perfectly balance each other out as partners. Being sisters, we both know what we can bring to the table. Our creative process is a mix of traveling and seeing first hand what talents the women in these communities offer and then collaborating with them on styles and products that work in the North American Market.
In 5 years, our goal is to be able to expand the amount of shows we do and provide more job opportunity to more communities as well as help create a sustainable work environment for them. For example, we would eventually love to be able to build a shop for them to make their products vs. them having to make them in their home. We would also like to be able to purchase better equipment for them to make the products.

The message behind our work is love and passion for who we work with, what we sell, and what we are doing to contribute to the world. We also want to bring awareness to people that by buying fair trade, hand-made goods, you can have quality, beautiful items that are also helping a greater cause.

Things are About to Get Crafty, Columbus!

Meet Claudia Hayes, of Sisters Two...
Hello, my name is Claudia Hayes. I am a 59-year-old mother of three adult children and the grandmother of two granddaughters, Ashlynn and Reagan. My husband and I are both retired. I live in Pickaway County, just east of Circleville, home of the famous Pumpkin Show! I have been into paper crafting for about six years now. My sister invited me to a card making class and I reluctantly went. After that, I became hooked! I went from sitting on a small footstool while creating paper crafts and using an old TV stand as my work space to taking over two of my children's bedrooms once they had moved out. This is going to be the first Avant-Garde show I've been to and participated in and I am very excited for this opportunity!
What inspires me to create is being able to put together "collections" of paper and make them into something I hope someone can enjoy for many years. Seeing the finished product and knowing it started out as "just a piece of paper " is so satisfying! I discovered my talent by just continuing to learn new techniques and putting it all together for a lovely finished product.
In five years I hope to expand my business to not just a Facebook page but a website. The message behind my work is this: something you thought you had no desire to do could actually become one of the joys in your life.

Meet Marcia Bennardo of Lanyard Love...
I grew up in Michigan, but have lived in Columbus for the past 20 years and currently work for Hallmark Cards. I am married with two daughters, ages 25 and 18. I also have a dog named Shea, after the former New York Mets stadium.. I enjoy scrapbooking and stamping cards as well as organizing things. I love to lay by the pool with a good book and I am very involved at my church.
I officially started selling my lanyards in July of 2015 and this will be my first Avant-Garde Craft Show. I like beautiful things and get an itch to make something out of nothing. I love the feeling of seeing something through to completion; it brings a smile to my face. I am also very practical so I like to make things that fill a need while also being pleasing to look at. I am not very athletic or technical, but I found that I am pretty good at crafts. One of the first things I remember making when I was a child was a wedding dress for my Barbie doll out of one of my mother's old slips using a little toy sewing machine. I have been creating and recreating ever since.
When I'm looking for fabric for my lanyards and key fobs, I try to find prints that are small and interesting to the eye. I sell to teens and professionals, those in the medical and academic field, etc. I try to have a wide variety from which to choose. My lanyards and key fobs make great gifts, so I found little gossamer bags to package them in. The heart charms add some bling and the split key ring and lobster clasps make them versatile. My husband jokes that someday I'll be on Shark Tank!

A lot of people use lanyards and key fobs. But why use a boring lanyard when you can have a fun one that matches your mood or your style? I also like to share the bounty with charities that are close to my heart. I have been very blessed, so it's fun to use my business as a way to give back.

Meet Lydia Heimbrock of Needle Eye Creations...
I am a Columbus native. I've been crafting my entire life. Currently I work at JoAnn's Fabrics. I've been married for a little over a year now. It was my husband who pushed me to start a business from my hobby. My husband looked at one of my stuffed animals and thought I could sell them. I've been sewing off and on for as long as I can remember. It didn't become a hobby until three years ago when I received a sewing machine as a Christmas gift. I started selling my stuffed animals at Craft Bazaars the following Holiday season. Since then I have added some other sewn items to my booth.
All of the different fabrics and project possibilities inspires me to create. I see something and my mind instantly starts imagining how I can make it or how I can make it better. I love figuring out how to make something and being able to say, "yes, I made this!" when I am done. People always seem to like and appreciate what I make. Sometimes I find the fabric first and then come up with the project or sometimes I have a project in mind and then have to find the perfect fabric.
This will be my second Avant-Garde show. In the future I hope to be selling my items at craft shows and on my website and then possibly putting on my own craft show.

Meet Megan Winterton of Alyce Creations...
Hello, my name is Megan Alyce! By day, I am a Graphic Designer with a passion for the arts, crafts, coffee and fitness. By night, I am a lover of craft beer, wine, a good movie, delicious food and snuggling with my wiener dog, Bentley! I first opened my Etsy shop last year and received such positive feedback that I decided to branch out and participate in the colorful, exciting world of craft shows. This will be my second craft show at age 24, and my very first show with Avant-Garde. I'm so overjoyed by everything I've accomplished thus far and truly believe that with a little faith, anything is possible!
Since I was young, I've had an eye for design. It wasn't until I was accepted into the Ohio University Graphic Design Program that my passion ensued. For two straight years I designed solely with my hands. Our professors encouraged us to discover the foundations of art before diving into the complexities of graphic design and I found the process to be fulfilling in my early days when my love for art first revealed itself. Now, nearly six years later, while my studies have led me into a rewarding career as a Lead Graphic Designer, a side of me began to miss the other half of design. The gritty, authentic half. Ultimately, I decided to flare up my old ardor and create a shop of my own! Middle names have always served as a sort of redeemer to me so I found it only fitting to name it after my own middle name: Alyce Creations.
Most of my products are inspired from the state that I love: Ohio. Over time, I hope to create pieces inspired from the states that others love, too so I can bring a little "home" for everyone to enjoy. What's more, I hope to seek innovation through travel, whether it's marching the modern flagstones of a bustling city or trudging the ancient foothills of our world's most natural of habitats. No matter what comes my way, I'm eager and excited to see what the future has in store! After all, in the words of David Bowie, "I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring." Stop by and meet me in person June 11th at the Columbus Avant-Garde Arts and Craft Show!
