Meet Candy Rose-Lucas from Candy Lucas . . . 
I have been a Massage Therapist for 21 years and a Reiki Master Teacher for 16 years. I taught in a massage school for over 14 years and I give private Reiki workshops and teach classes in an Energy school in Columbus.  I became interested in stones and crystals and started to take classes about the subject. I found that stones have their own energy which can help to bring harmony to the body.  I also learned about Chakra stones which are laid on the body that can help with a person’s healing process. Working with stones is what awakened my interest in jewelry making.

I never thought of myself as being a crafty person until several years ago, a friend of mine, asked me to take a few craft classes with her and I found out that I enjoyed them and started taking additional classes as well. I have always enjoyed jewelry and with my interest in energy work with the use of stones, I decided to try the two together and found out how much I enjoyed making jewelry with different stones such as agates or jaspers.  Each time I produce a piece of jewelry, I use Reiki. I clear the jewelry and infuse each piece with Reiki.

I have been making jewelry for 2 -½ years.  It’s exciting to see how creative one can be making jewelry. A few pieces of jewelry that I have created have been from what people requested.  For an example, if they want stones to help with focus or help with stress, I research which stones assist with that and make a piece of jewelry consisting of those stones.

Since I am new at making jewelry, I believe the sky is the limit.  I wanted something in retirement that is fulfilling and creative and I have found it.  I want to strive to get better and create a prosperous business. Jewelry is not only beautiful to wear but also brings positive energy and harmony to the wearer.

Meet Brittany Smith from The Little Lark Co. . . . 

I am a part-time crafter and work full-time as an environmental inspector. I am fortunate to be able to work outdoors during the week and spend my weekends creating bath products and designing jewelry. I also love to knit, read, camp and travel. This winter, my husband and I will be traveling to Iceland, and we're very much looking forward to seeing the Northern lights! 

I began making my own lip balm in 2015 and realized I had created a pretty high-quality product! I decided to start selling on Etsy in 2016. From there, I began experimenting with bath products such as soaps and sugar scrubs. Since I craft part-time, I really use it as a relaxing hobby. It's something I can do to unwind and take a break form work. I enjoy crafting products with high quality ingredients, knowing that someone will enjoy my products as much as I do. 

When I'm designing my jewelry, it involves a lot of playing around with different patterns, beads, and colors. In my free time, I'll sketch ideas of what I would like to piece to look like. With my bath products, I thin about what kind of products I would like to use myself or how to make my current products better. I'll whip up some test batches for myself, friends, and family to try and use their feedback to help myself improve. 

I'm a practical person, and I love the idea of products that are fashionable as well as being functional. I appreciate that the jewelry I am making serves a purpose and can help alleviate pain for those who wear it. 

I would like to explain what magnetic therapy is and how individuals can benefit from it. Magnetic therapy is based on the concept of using magnetic energy to increase oxygen absorption and blood flow. It is safe and natural alternative therapy that has been used throughout history to help promote healing and ease pain. For some people, the results of wearing magnetic therapy jewelry can be very fast. However, others may find it takes a little longer to notice improvements. Results can vary from person to person, so it is important to wear your jewelry as much as possible!

Meet Debra Smith Tolley from Mad River Joys...

Mad River Joys is a newly established business by Debra Smith Tolley that is still experiencing many "firsts". The 2017 Columbus Summer Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show will be her first Avant-Garde show as a vendor. That show comes only twelve days before Mad River Joys' first anniversary.

Debra grew up along the Mad River in rural Urbana, Ohio, and graduated from Miami University with an architectural design degree. She has always loved nature and design, so she is now combining those loves to bring to many others the joys they give her.

Debra's many items of home décor, jewelry, and photography are handmade by her design. The designs reflect her desire to bring joy to everyone, everyday.

Items include pocket memory keys, fairy gardens, shower curtain dangles, bookmarks, ornaments, ornament hangers, beaded tea lights, wine glass charms, bottle stoppers, beaded napkin rings, purse dangles, sun catchers, decorated glassware, door hangings, fan/light pulls, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, photo coasters, photo mouse mats, and framed photos. The list of products is always growing.

The photos are all taken by Debra, or her husband, Frederick "B'ar" Tolley.

Custom orders are welcomed. Some items work wonderfully for wedding décor.

Since most items are handmade to order, delivery may take two to four weeks. If items are in stock, they will be shipped right away.

Debra's inspiration generally comes from a combination of a walk in her large yard, materials on hand, and shared pictures of others creations.

She would love to have a staff producing her designs in the next five years.

Meet Carolyn Scono from Jewelry by Carolyn Scono...

I absolutely love what I create and take pride in the design and quality of each piece that someone will love wearing.  I have been designing and creating jewelry since 2003.  I get pleasure from creating pieces that are distinctive, one of a kind, easy to wear at affordable prices.

Design inspiration comes from the semi-precious gemstones, cultured pearls or glass beads that are introduced in most pieces to craft elegant art jewelry.  My work is handmade, constantly evolving and fresh applying a variety of techniques to create unique designs--such as metalsmithing/soldering, wire-wrapping, and fold-forming; beading; weaving chain maille patterns and Kumihimo.

Meet Julie Ross from De Constructed...

I have been creating jewelry for about 5 years. But never sold anything until two years ago!

I am inspired by absolutely everything! Especially people and clothing. Sometimes I become overwhelmed with ideas that I can’t even sort it all out in my brain. Once I get creating, I can go until the wee hours of the morning.

I began scrapbooking years ago and my interests began to evolve into mixed media type projects. Somewhere along the line I began playing around with old jewelry. The endless possibilities intrigued me. I began finding unusual items to incorporate into my jewelry. I love to scour flea markets and yard sales looking for old/broken/discarded jewelry and other rusty and unusual found items. My passion is to bring new life to these unwanted items.

I was shopping in a little boutique in Galena, Ohio, Talula’s. I overheard a conversation about making jewelry. I spoke up and said “that’s what I do” (very unusual of me BTW). The next thing I know I am meeting with the owner and began selling some of my jewelry at her boutique. I owe her so much for giving me the confidence to really “put myself out there” and show the world what I love to do.

My creative process is a HOT mess! I have to have my supplies scattered about in front of me. I have always been a messy creator.

The message behind my work is that everything old can be revitalized and new again!

Meet Joyce Dorn from Jewelry Designs by JoyD...

I have been creating Jewelry for about 10 years, I knew I was meant to do this when I visited the Cultural Arts Center in Downtown Columbus. As soon as I stepped into the Jewelry area – every sensor in me was pinging inside me and I knew I found a place I could express myself. With this I have also taken other classes from local Bead stores and Workshops in and out of Ohio to learn more and get better at my craft of metalsmithing.

I have participated in six shows with Avant Garde. I am thrilled to be part of this event and have learned quite a bit about selling my pieces and interacting and helping customers. I like that I see the returning customers at the shows. Greeting new people and helping them make their jewelry choices. It helps me improve my design choices and see what customers are looking for. I have altered pieces to so they have the best fit for them. So I guess you could say my customers inspire me to create and continue to learn.

My creative process is based on what I have learned and I pour over magazines and pictures even the coloring books looking at drawings or that “spark”. I don’t copy I create my version. I have jewelry mentors – people that inspire me with their styles – I don’t copy them but they create my desire to do better!

In five years – I hope I can say I have a customer base that I can cater to and hope that I can attend more workshops to continue learning. I like the rustic in my designs – I like working with the copper and silver metal and wire components.

If there is a message to be learned – I would say it would be to continue to learn and find new methods of creating. Be true to yourself – and your craft.

It's Almost Showtime, Columbus!

Meet Lydia Heimbrock from Needle Eye Creations...

Hi! I'm a Columbus native but I recently moved to Loveland. I've been a crafter my entire life and currently work as a part time manager at JoAnn's Fabrics. I've been sewing off and on for as long as I can remember, but it didn't become a hobby until three years ago. I've been married for almost two years now, and it was my husband who pushed me to start a business from my hobby. This will be my third Avant-Garde Show this year!

I'm inspired to create by all of the different fabric and project possibilities. I see something and my mind instantly goes to figuring out how I can make it, or how I can make it even better. I love figuring out the problem of how to make something and then being able to say that my items are handmade. 

I started crafting at a young age and it has always been a part of me. People always seem to like and appreciate what I make. I create things for the enjoyment of others and for my enjoyment as well!

Meet David Monteith from Dejected Steel...

I'm David and I used to work in the roofing industry installing standing seam metal roofs. After working with the sheet metal for a few years, I started using the unused scrap metal from work for some of my first pieces. Not only is this my first Avant-Garde Show, but this is my first art show ever!

 I've always been creative, and while I was working in roofing, I discovered that I enjoy using sheet metal as an artistic medium. After I decide what the subject matter of my piece is, I cut out different shapes of steel and layer them to create the finished product.

I hope to eventually dedicate myself to my artwork full time. The message of my work is open to interpretation by the viewer. 

Meet Kathleen Modory from A Moment for Mom...

Hi! I'm Kathleen and I'm married with a two-year-old son. I live in Medina, Ohio, and work as a medical coder during the week. I have only been making bath products for a few months, and this will be my first Avant-Garde Show!

 As a working mom of a two-year-old, the bathtub was the only place to be alone with just me! I was buying a ton of bath bombs then thought that I should make them myself so I get exactly the scents and colors I want. I love to try new things with my bath products. I see things in every day life and think of ways to make bath bombs that look like ordinary things. 

In five years I hope to still be doing craft fairs every weekend. It's a nice thing to do with my husband! We get to spend time together as a family and get to know the people in our community. The message behind my work is take the time to slow down and put you first! Everyone needs a moment for themselves!

Meet Nettie Pyne from Pyne Pysanky...

Hi! I'm Nettie and my full time job is at Nationwide Children's Hospital in the Research Institute. I am also a black belt in taekwondo, and spend a good deal of time training and teaching children's classes! With the little free time I have left, I make Pysanka, an ancient Ukrainian art form that uses wax-resistant methods to create intricate designs on eggshells. This will be my first Avant-Garde Show!

 I first learned about Pysanka in a high school Fiber Arts class. We did a two-week unit on Pysanka, and I completely fell in love with it. I begged my parents for a beginner's kit, and they obliged by getting me one for Christmas! I've never looked back! As soon as I started, I discovered I had some natural skill for the art form. My attention to detail and patience with repetitive tasks really lend themselves well to the art.

I think the overall message behind my work is that you can find great beauty in places you wouldn't normally expect. Each egg also contains significant symbolism. Every color, pattern, curl, or animal design can mean something, so whenever I make one as a gift or am designing a custom order, I try to make an egg that symbolizes how I see that person or what wishes and blessings I want to offer them.

Meet Susan Stein from Jewelry by Susan...

I'm Susan and I'm a 64-year-old wife, grandmother, and retired teacher from the Columbus City Schools. My first priority in life is to my husband and our 10 grandchildren! My best times are being with my family and friends. All of these things make me one lucky lady! Recently, I have added jewelry making to my perfect life!

 As a teacher for 30 years, I had to be creative in my teaching style to accommodate the students in my class. This was more controlled creativity, but when I retired, I didn't have anything holding me back! I was introduced to jewelry making from a friend and knew it was perfect for me!

As the same with most creative endeavors, you start with what you are comfortable with and then improvise from there. I found out that my signature style is using large, bold stones or beads. My process is just trial and error. My jewelry is reasonably priced so my customers can own several pieces and choose one to wear that fits their mood and makes what they are wearing pop!
