Meet Jacqueline and Jocelyn from JS2andCo... 

I am Jacqueline and I co-owned JS2andCo with my sister Jocelyn. We started this venture from the need to find financial independence and hopefully change our families lives for years to come. We started our business, September of 2021 and have been loving it every step of the way. This is going to be our first Avant-Garde Art and Craft Show and we are beyond excited!

I got into my crafting hobby after I was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2020. After I had my surgery in April of 2021, I was looking for something I could do that would give me joy. So browsing on social media while recovering from my surgery I started seeing so many people doing heat transfer vinyl on shirts. I got so intrigued with it and discovered that I could do that. So I got on my laptop and started researching and brainstorming ideas with my sister and that is how JS2andCo got started. 

I am inspired to create different designs through life experiences, things I see around me that make sense for me and that I would love to have. Our motto is "if I don't like it or use it won't be created". We love to give our customers creations that come from the heart.

I would describe my creative process in a few steps. I start by thinking about what it is that my customer wants. I then do research online about what it is trending and then I discuss it with my sister. If we like it enough that we would wear it or buy it, then we get on it by figuring out how to put our own spin on it. A lot of trial and error, but the end result is what matters. I like to think of the message behind my clothing as simplistic, comfortable, and unique.

My main goal for the future is to be working on JS2andCo full time. 

Meet Alex Clark and Casey from AlexmClarkart...

Casey and Alex are a local central Ohio writing and illustrating team, currently with two children's books, Cora and the Moon & When I Grow Up. They are two creative Dads who met while working at McGraw-Hill Education and have been inseparable since.

Alex has been illustrating children's books since 2011 but has been drawing since he was a kid. Alex has been drawing since he was a child and his parents encouraged him to keep drawing. His elementary art teacher truly saw his talents and guided him towards a future career in the arts. Cora and the Moon is Casey's second children's book with Alex.

We're both creatives at heart so it is part of our DNA. Children's books are so important to kids and we are blessed to bring that joy to children.

We would describe our creative process as controlled chaos! With full time jobs, we have to find the time to create our stories so the creativity comes in bursts between family priorities and life. 

This will be our first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show and we are so excited! 

For our future, We have a few more story ideas in the works and hopefully a Cora series. Each book has taken us 2-3 years to create so we will see where we are in 5 years. 

Meet Evan Edmiston from Hunter Design Company...

Hunter Design Company was established in 2018 but I have been woodworking since 2015.  Many of my pieces were inspired by my hobbies and interests. An example of this is my ocean art work. This work was inspired by my trips to Maui. My poker pieces come from playing cards and my bullet tables come from my hunting hobby.

I started woodworking when I needed a sound diffuser for my recording studio. I bought the tools and the wood, built the piece and then started just building more things as I needed them. I realized I enjoyed working with my hands and started seeing what I could make and eventually turned it into a business. This in mind, I wouldn’t say it was discovered as much as it was honed. Woodworking is easy. Fine woodworking and making pieces that will last generations is a trial by error skill developed over years and is a continuous learning experience.

Even though it sounds a bit hippy, I like to describe my creative process by letting the wood tell me what it wants to be. As you clean up the wood and start to see it’s character, you can tell what it’s purpose will be.

As long as people like my pieces and enjoy them I’ll keep making them. As long as I have a passion for what I do, I’ll keep doing it. The passion translates to your work. If you are not passionate about what you do it shows.

Meet Debbie Rubenstein from from 4 Dog Loves... 

A little bit about myself and my company... I have been and currently am a High Risk OB Sonographer with Ohiohealth Maternal Fetal Medicine on a full time basis for the past 20+ years. In my spare time, I started making fresh dog treats for our one pup, Bagel.  He had a chicken intolerance so it forced my husband and myself to find alternatives for his treats. We originally started with one recipe, Peanut Butter Pumpkin treats that were also shared within our neighborhood with all of his friends. We did this for 9 years and everyone suggested that we open a doggie treat bakery. In July 2021, we decided to expand and created our little business 4 Dog Loves - Homemade Treats / Bakery. We bake everything out of our house and everything is made as ordered to help maintain freshness.

This coming July will mark one year since starting 4 Dog Loves! We are so excited to take in our one year by attending our first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show.

Dogs have always been my inspiration to create. Having fresh treats for dogs is something I love being able to do. I enjoy doing it and I especially enjoy making the cakes. I keep my prices low too, we believe in being price conscious in today’s economy. I always ask my customers to please send me a photo of their dogs eating their cakes. I love to see them enjoying them.

I got into my craft when I had a dog of my own who was unable to eat any chicken product. This didn't leave many name brand treats for them to eat. By creating my product, I was able to make treats suitable for them. They love to be my taste testers when I start the process of a new recipe or type of treat!

The message behind my work is Every dog deserves to be spoiled a little with good fresh homemade treats for being good. They also deserve to have their special days like birthdays or “gotcha’ days” celebrated.

Today is the Day!

Meet Jamie Henry from Fine Paper Greetings...
I returned to college later in life to obtain a B.S. in Graphic Design, Visual Fine Art, which lead to my print graphic design freelance career. I enjoy the print side of the design world, but I wanted to also create paper items. It is the texture, the layering, the design with die cuts, and the final creation that brings a smile to someone’s day that gives me joy. My in-home paper crafting studio is complete with ultra-premium paper, cards, envelopes, and any other crafting / creating tool you can imagine. I’ve been doing this for 15 years.

This will be my first as a vendor at Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show, which I am thoroughly excited to participate and so humbled to be included. 

What inspires me to create? A new die cut, a new pad of paper, or a specific color of paper I’ve been wanting to use. I challenge myself at times with trying to use perhaps only two colors (including the various shades of that color) to create a “Coffee Today” card or a fun pet card.

 

How I got into my craft.. My mother and grandmother were my inspiration - each were unbelievably crafty at a time when craft supplies were limited and you had to be creative with what you had on hand - a cardboard tissue box became beautiful backgrounds on cards, tags, and journals. I still use the patterns from tissue boxes for my greeting cards - I just cannot throw any piece of paper away!

How I discovered my talent.. As a young child, I “designed” greeting cards for several nursing homes as my grandmother was a volunteer - I wanted to give the residents a little smile as so many of them seemed lonely. I wanted them to know someone cared. My cards, tags, gift bags, etc., anything from paper, I use to brighten someone’s day. Through the nursing home creation years ago, I was fortunate enough to continue creating paper items.

 

My creative process. As an “organized” individual, I create themed cards - “Coffee Today” is what I’m creating currently, as seen on my website of www.finepapergreetings.com, as well as pet cards. I want my die cuts to tell the story as many of my cards do not contain words, or if any words are included, it is perhaps one or two. I want the card to speak for itself - the joy of opening the envelope, seeing the creation, then the layers of texture to bring the card to life. There are days when it may take five hours to create a single card as I’m very particular about color-coordination, layering of die cuts, and the placement of the die cuts. 

My five year plan.. Continued growth in the paper world - creating series of cards, personalizing cards and invitations for clients, and working with organizations through donations of my cards to inspire younger people to create through paper.

 

The message behind my work.. “Creativity Through Paper” - a text message, an email, or a post is fine, but to receive an envelope in the mail with your name, opening that envelope and seeing a card someone purchased just for you, then reading the message inside - that would make my day! The cards and all paper items I create are only items I would purchase myself. The creative process can be difficult, but it is most rewarding when a client is excited about her 30 “Coffee Today” cards she wants to send out for her coffee brunch party. 

Meet Palestina Jaber from Turath...

My name is Palestina Jaber, 31 years old, and a mom of two little girls! I’ve been in the US for seven years now and within those years I worked as a clerk, a school tutor, a teller, and a banker! After giving birth, a month earlier than due date, to my eight-months baby, I had lots of medical issues that required physical therapy and stopped me from working as a banker! Now that my baby is not as needy as a newborn is, I had lots of free time and that’s when I started designing and embroidering! It was the dream that I had to put aside for so long due to work but now that I’m no longer working, I reached out to my family and friends back in my homeland, Palestine and we started talking about embroidery projects, meanings of patterns, and relationships to surroundings! And that’s how Turath was born! 

Palestinian embroidery is something that is passed down from my grandmother to my mom and hopefully to my daughters! It’s the means of transferring cultural stories about Palestinian nature to future generations, so it’s been a while that I knew how to do but just recently got dedicated to! I just started Turath in the last four months, and this is going to be my first AG show and my second participation in events around me! 

Palestinian embroidery, with all the symbolism and hidden meanings of patterns, requires a lengthy process! Before creating any piece, I have to think out the motif I want to address, search for the right symbols and representations, create patterns, design the piece, pick colors, and finally start embroidering! Then the process of embroidering starts; a process that requires lots of effort and time as it’s all handmade! The outcome, though, is a piece that’s a one-of-a-kind and made with love! 

Right now I’m establishing a new brand that aims at serving, preserving, and repurposing Palestinian art of embroidery! 15% of product profits is donated to help pay off student debts in Palestinian universities as a way to give back to my homeland community! In five years, I want to see my startup expanding to make bigger piece products like dresses, jackets and shoes! I want to create collections for every season of the year instead of currently making individual products that are mainly accessories! 

Meet Gail Messick from Bambanani Africa Crafts...

I am a retired Dental Hygienist who then served in the Peace Corps from 2010-2014 in the small southern African kingdom of Eswatini.  While there, I connected with a group of volunteer community healthcare workers who wanted to learn how to make something to sell.  The products I market are the result of our partnership.  

Since my return to the US in 2014, I have been marketing their products.  I return to Eswatini for 2-3 months each year to work on product development and then bring new products back to the US to sell.  ALL proceeds from my sales are securely returned to the artisans themselves. This is my first Avant-Garde show

What inspires me to create. I am inspired by witnessing the transformation of the women I work with and helping to bring out the creative spirit within them.  

How I got into this craft.. I've enjoyed sewing since I was 12, and have dabbled in various crafts ever since.

How I discovered my talent.. My talent has evolved over the years, but in this endeavor, my talent is in patiently encouraging unskilled but motivated individuals to discover their inner talents

My creative process.. Through lots of trial and error, attention to detail and responding to the reactions of others, together we continue to improve.

My five year goal.. In 5 years, I hope to develop more leadership among the artisans themselves so that they control more of the business and its profits.

The message behind my work: Empowering women with skills and support which enables them to generate income, while working from home.

Meet Mary Mozes from Winnie's Treasures...
I am a business owner, and I created Winnie’s Treasures LLC because I have been a crafter my entire life and I wanted the opportunity to share my passion with others. I am a wife and a fur mama. My interests include running, cycling, yoga, and reading. I enjoy being busy! I have been crafting in one form or another for as long as I can remember. I decided to open Winnie’s Treasures LLC just this year.

This is my first show Avant-Garde show, and I am so excited! As I said, I have crafted for as long as I can remember. I made my first beaded crafts as a small child. I first learned how to sew as a stress reliever during school and when I started my career. I taught myself how to knit in high school because I was bored. I always crafted because I enjoyed it. I did not think it was anything 

special until my family started requesting for me to make them various things.

Ideas come to me at weird times. I can’t force it. I will be doing something totally different and then I’ll an overwhelming urge to create something.  I hope to continue to grow my business and become a more frequent presence at craft shows. I also hope to build my business through Etsy so that I can reach a wider audience. 

Meet Rachel Wayne from Mandarin Moon...

Hello everyone! My name is Rachel Wayne, and I am the artist behind Mandarin Moon Jewelry. I am originally from Kentucky, but have lived in Ohio for over 12 years now, and am currently residing in Dublin. This is my first Avant-Garde show, and my very first art show ever, I am incredibly excited!

I have always been making things here and there my entire life, but finally found my passion for creating with metal and gemstones about a year ago and have been going full force ever since! I have a very deep love for the amazing gems that come out of our Earth, especially turquoise, which you will see a lot in my work. Those gemstones, in combination with my fascination of bending metal to my will with fire (although it fights back sometimes), inspire me to create different pieces of jewelry for others to adorn and express themselves with.

Each piece of jewelry is hand crafted by me every step of the way, from sourcing each gemstone to the final polish before it is packed lovingly into a gift box. It means more than anything to me to see someone wear my jewelry and feel great!

Meet Nicole Gersper from 3 Dogs and a Cat Sewing...

I learned how to sew as a child with my mom and my sister. I stopped sewing for a long time but just started up again in the past year and found my passion in making bags and zippered pouches.  I actually have 3 dogs (Bruce Wayne, Harley Davidson, Diana Prince) all lab mixes of some sort and a cat named Lucy.  Bruce is my supervisor and is usually sitting in my sewing room keeping me company.  My hubby is a comic book geek (hence the dogs names) and has had a big influence in my life.

This year will be my first Avant-Garde show and I'm looking forward to it! I like to make things that are pretty and make people smile. finding a great deal on something I think I can make something special out of makes me smile. When I got started I wanted to do something creative outside my technical day life. I also wanted something to keep my hands busy and out of the cookie jar and mind out of the television or my cell phone. 

My sister was a big influence. She sews a lot and shares with me and I need to see accomplishment in a short period of time which i can do with bags.  I shop for fabric a lot, and I find something special that I think will look good. I look at bag patterns and what others have made and get inspiration. In five years, My intent is to keep my business my side job. I love both my day job and my night job. I am interested in working in different fabrics and possibly getting into leather goods. The message behind my work is you can have something special and pretty and makes you smile but not cost a fortune or pay for the brand. 

Meet Ameerah Akram from Nontle Creations...

My name is Ameerah I'm a 28 yr old wife and mom of 3. Originally from Cleveland, OH but grew up in Atlanta, GA currently in Columbus, Oh. I am really into natural and holistic methods of healing which led me into my self taught artistry of now 5 yrs exploring entrepreneurship through art. I have yet to participate in Avant-Garde but heard great things about it and really excited about participating. My inspiration is in tune empowerment and healing first. I love watching my customers be intuitively led to their crystal jewelry it lets me know how beautifully the seen and unseen in connected. I make astrological pieces so many times people will first choose a stone from their sign before even knowing it's their sign. That is inspiring for me.

I started really being into crystals and exploring that world and buying tons I wanted to share that healing with others with beautiful unique Creations. I discovered my talent by jumping in head first I went to one jewelry making class and the rest was history. My gift had completely revealed itself. My creative process as a Cancer thrives in comfort and being home. I love my home I love the energy of it and when it's time to get started I'm normally relaxed and in a whole other creative world. In five years I see myself continually growing having a huge space where ppl can come receive a wide variety of natural healing with a garden,  massages,  crystal therapy,  herbal healing, reiki and beyond.

Meet Larry Maniccia from Larry Maniccia Photography...

I am new to the Columbus area. I moved here at the start of 2018 after living in Cleveland for the last 22 years. By day I am a business professional. While not at work I love to spend time hiking, taking pictures, and spending time with my wife and twelve year old son. I got started with photography in 2012 after seeing videos and blogs online about the subject. My interest and passion for the craft grew quickly as I got more involved with it and it’s now something I can’t imagine life without. My love for it stems from how different the process is compared to my day

job.

This will be my first Avant-Garde show, and I am excited to display my work and meet some of the attendees. I enjoy talking about the scenes I have captured and hope that my prints evoke emotion and inspire others to explore the outdoors. I love the process of exploring and finding new subjects to photograph. It’s a process that allows me to be creative. I also enjoy that it allows me

to share places with people that otherwise they may not be able to visit themselves.

I don’t know if discover is the right word; more like refine. When I first started with photography I wasn’t very good at it. Over time I have learned a lot both from trial and error, and through other photographers who were kind enough to share their knowledge. To me it’s essentially an adventure! There are times when I plan out what I want to go out and capture, while other times I go out with no predetermined plan and just improvise based on my surroundings. Both have their merits, and each presents its own challenge.

In five years my hope is that I can continue to develop my style and vision as an artist. Over time I would like to devote more time to it with the goal of someday doing it full time. The message behind my work is that the world around us is a beautiful place! Get out, explore, and enjoy it. Doing so will recharge your mind, body, and soul.

One More Columbus Preview!

Meet Michelle from Riverland Studios...

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, I have always been around the area and worked with art. I serve as a graphic artist by day, and can be found in my home studio working with clay or sewing most evenings and weekends. I live with my very supportive and creative husband, and a mischievous little cat who often finds herself covered in clay. I've been working as an artist/maker for much of my adult life. I learned to sew as a young child, and that started me down this path. I'm somewhat new to ceramics – working with clay for only two years.

This is my fourth Avant-Garde show – and this is my first time bringing ceramics! I love working with my hands. I've explored different kinds of art and media, but find myself most drawn to clay. I love the functionality – a little piece of art for everyday use – and how you can often see the maker's hands in the work. My grandfather gave me a clay pot from his childhood grocery store that is at least 100 years old and I can see and feel the maker's finger marks inside. I'm inspired by the hands of that maker.

I come from a pretty crafty/handy family. My mom was always sewing things or decorating cakes when I was little, and my grandfather and dad were always building something out of wood. I learned so much from them, and can't keep my hands off of art supplies and materials of any kind. I signed up for a ceramics class a couple years ago with a friend, just for fun. I had always been curious about clay, but never tried it. Once I started handling clay, I couldn't put it down. I have worked hard to learn as much as I could in a short period of time, and just can't get enough! I took multiple classes each week for a while until I bought my own wheel and started working at home. I still attend that class weekly.

I like to let the natural beauty of the clay shine through my work and speak for itself, and I'm most drawn to things that feel good in the hand and function in a very practical way. So, I start from thinking about how the form would feel to hold or drink/serve from, then consider the natural color of the clay and how I can add to that. I still have plenty to learn about clay, the process, and science of ceramics. I hope to continue to explore new things and push myself to learn and grow as much as I can.

My message to my customer is that my work is meant to be used and handled in everyday life. Even the practical things can be beautiful and hand-crafted!

Meet Jeni and Julia from Columbus Flower Girls...

We are Jeni and Julia! We are best friends and neighbors who love to craft. We have been making flowers for about six months now. This will be our first craft show, and we are so excited to be participating! We love taking something as simple as a sheet of paper and creating something beautiful. We both have always liked to make things and work with our hands, so our passion evolved from that. 

We discovered our talent when we made them for a birthday party and they looked amazing! Everyone who saw the flowers wanted them! This is when we realized there was a market for paper flowers.

We do custom orders so our process begins with speaking to our client to get a sense of their style and colors in their space. Next, we present them with a "vision board" that lays out the colors and patterns we have selected. From there flowers are made! In five years, we hope Columbus Flower Girls becomes a brand that is associated with the best of the best! We want you to think of Columbus Flower Girls for not only your home and business decor, but we also want to make a name for ourselves in special events with flower walls, back drops, centerpieces and more!

We love seeing peoples faces light up when they see them. We have had the privilege of doing many inspiring orders for foster children, new babies and new businesses. We love being a part of such an important moment in peoples lives. We want to spread joy and beauty through our flowers!

Meet Nicholas Regan from No Rulz...

No Rulz is a fully integrated business of artists with various abilities and strengths. Through our love of colors and art, we create fashionable and wearable tie dye clothing, accessories, and new and “upcycled” furniture. All our items are unique, hand-dyed and/or hand-painted. No two exactly alike!

We have been tie dying since 2007, and this is our second Avant-Garde Show. Our love of colors and the freedom of tie dying keeps us going. It is always fun to see what the final products look like. 

No Rulz started as an art class for adults with and without special needs. We did a little of everything from painting to pottery. We tie dyed that first summer and a passerby asked if our socks were for sale – and so began No Rulz. Every person has talents and gifts to share and when you surround yourself with people who believe in you, it gives you confidence to explore and create. We love tie dye cause you can’t make a mistake!! Our products like us are perfectly imperfect.

Everyone has a voice at No Rulz. There are no bad ideas except for the ones you don’t share. We try multiple ways of tie dying and adapt our processes to create top of line and one-of-a-kind products. 

Our goal in 5 years is to have our own space for production with a store front and café. We want to offer employment opportunities, continue to create quality products, be able to sell our own art, and offer opportunities to work in the restaurant business. We want to create a space where our customers can come and enjoy a cup of coffee and light lunch, shop, watch how it’s done and enjoy our space with us!

 No Rulz is a business founded on the principle that we are all capable and have abilities and strengths. We believe in adapting the job to the individual and not the other way around. We are dedicated to building awareness, acceptance, and independence for all our artists.

Meet Melissa Winters from PurpleArtLoVE...
My name is Melissa Winters. I live in Granville, Ohio with my husband and two children. We have two Cavalier Spaniels and a tortoise named Ruby. I have lived in Licking County most of my life. The only time I left was to go to school at Otterbein College. I have been a “maker” my whole life but PurpleArtLoVE came to life in 2007. I wanted to make unique items that really could not be found elsewhere. My shop name is a nod to PRINCE.

This will be my first Avant-Garde show. I hope to make this the first of many! Inspiration comes from all over for me. I do find myself being inspired by music and other artists. Also I think “makers” can’t help themselves. They are going to do something with their hands. It could be cooking, writing, music, art. It just comes out!

I began to collect quite a collection of jewelry. I gave it as gifts, kept some and I just kept making. I realized I had better share with others! Jewelry makes you feel fantastic and fits no matter what kind of day you are having. It is truly for everyone. 

Calling yourself an “artist” is sometimes hard. You want to be worthy of the name. I try to improve daily. Things come to me out of the blue. The idea might hit me in the shower, in a dream or just trying to think through an idea. I am a “try it” type person. My process is also affected by the fact I want to wear unique items. I want people to say “I have never seen that before”. I don’t want everyone to be cookie cutter.

I hope that PurpleArtLoVE will become familiar in Central Ohio and beyond. I would like to have a following of people who want to be uniquely themselves. I also hope to begin an Art Collective in Downtown Newark. It is an area that is re-building itself into quite an art area. 

My message to people is to be yourself, no one else does it better!

Meet Sharlene Robertson from Sharlene Robertson Designs...
I started making jewelry when I was 14 years old. I specifically started making chainmail jewelry and working with metals when I was 19. It captured my interest and I started making so much jewelry that I didn't know what to do with it! In October 2016 I opened my Etsy store to start selling some of pieces and I started doing art shows a little while after that. This will be the first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Shows that I will be participating in.

With a background in Fashion Design, I strive to make pieces that are unique, bold and fashion forward. I love combining unexpected materials together to see how they accentuate the human form. Architectural shapes and textures have always been an inspiration to me but I am always on the hunt for new ideas. Lately, I've taken an interest in using crystals along with leather and chains to create unique body chains that help elevate your everyday look.

Creating jewellery has always been a passion of mine. I started at a young age by playing around with beads, making jewellery for my Barbies and over time it blossomed into something more. I find jewelry making very calming and being a fidgety person, I like to throw on a movie and make jewelry while I'm watching it. I discovered my talent when I started receiving compliments from people on my jewelry. I saw their amazement when I told them that I made the jewelry myself and it made me think that maybe there's something here to explore further. Then I started selling my jewelry and got really good feedback from people who bought pieces so I've tried to grow my business even more.

Most of my creative process happens in my head. I tend to visualize how I want a design to look after I see what materials I'm going to be working with. Designs come to me pretty easily which I'm grateful for. I do sometimes go back and re-work my designs if I think they can be improved in some way. I like to drape chains on my form to start the creative process and then I see where it leads me. Sometimes I'm able to finish multiple body chains in one night but other pieces take more time especially when they involve chainmail of any kind.

I hope to have my own website by the end of this year and hope to grow my own business and client base to a level where I only need to work on jewelry in 5 years. I would love to expand my business so I can work with precious metals and precious gemstones.I want everyone who wears my pieces to feel special and feel like they stand out. I want it to elevate their outfits and be something they can have fun with! Accessorizing is a fun way to express yourself and that's what I want people to be able to do!
