Week of Show Count Down, 1 of 5 Remaining Posts!

Meet Rachael Severs from Women of the Wildwood...
We are sisters committed to growing a company that provides truly natural products using pure ingredients, processed to preserve their quality, free from unnecessary chemicals; and providing a true customer-company relationship by selling, buying and growing local.
Women of the Wildwood has only been selling to the public for approximately six months, we have been creating products for our family for years. This will be our first AG show and we are very excited to meet new people and share the good stuff.
We get our passion from our own daily needs. We started out as unhappy consumers, battling our own dry/oily/sensitive skin, our children's eczema, our mechanic brothers' burns and blisters, and our garden ravaged hands.  Between Ashley's artistic soul, Amber's love of all of nature's gifts, and Rachael's thirst for knowledge we really created something great that we feel obligated to share.
We started our business to fill a void. Its impossible to be an expert on every product, we are obligated to trust the companies that make the products we use, especially on our skin! Everyone's skin is different, and that journey down the skin care aisle is a long one. We have put in the time and the research and we'd like the opportunity to be your guide. We are right next door, and our ingredients come from down the road. We are your neighbors, and a family sharing the good stuff.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses, but together we shine, and the time spent with family learning and sharing is priceless. We are constantly improving and growing, the connections we make, the information we exchange, grows the strength of our community. We love Ohio and are excited to be a part of the force that makes it strong.

Meet Lea Gray from Lea Gray Designs...

I have lived in Columbus for over ten years and have found that it is a true art mecca for art lovers and buyers alike. This will be my fourth Avant-Garde show!

Although I have loved art my whole life and enjoyed every aspect of making it, I wasn't ready to start my own business in it until I had the courage, perseverance and faith to make it happen. Each piece of work I make depends on how I feel. But in all reality, they strongly relate to each other in the meditation and relaxation I benefit from when making the work.
With Origami having repetitive folds, and so many of them, it tends to be a deep focus where I can indulge in the activity and let my worries float away. I also teach Origami, to take away the challenging parts for people and allow them to feel the deep relaxation that comes with folding.

Painting for me is a way to also relax, but in a different mindset. It allows me to be expressive with a vitality that also creates a serenity within myself. Each painting I make speaks differently in a language of energy that I hope to captivate the audience with.
When making purses, I focus on the practical needs of a person matched with the attractiveness a purse can have to add that kick of color to any wardrobe. The colors take on palettes that are very relative to my paintings and pull the eye in. Making the purse durable, practical, easy to use and organizational, as well as beautiful and eye-catching, can be a quite a challenge, but that is what drives me to make them.

All of my work can be customized completely to suit a person's needs and is highly encouraged. Most of my newly implemented patterns and designs come from individuals desiring something I have never tried. The love behind creating something that fits that person's environment  or wardrobe even, is one of the most rewarding things of my career. It is the passion behind making the person truly happen with a specially designed product just for them, that propels me to continue in the work that I do.

Meet Melissa Rhoades from Melissa Blue Naturals...
I am Melissa Rhoades of Melissa Blue Naturals. I’ve been making mineral baths and body scrubs for two years now. I am native to Ohio and am always involved in a creative or active endeavor. I thrive in the out-of-doors and feel most at home when gardening or hiking in the woods. I’m a natural teacher, mostly with little kids and have been involved in environmental education and gardening projects for the past 10 years. I’m a designer and creator. I can spend my days designing, rearranging and creating. It’s easy for me to make something out of nothing and once I get started the ideas keep coming. I can be found drawing, painting, photographing, making cards, collage and writing/journaling…..and just sitting, staring and dreaming. I require lots of dreaming time.

What do I value most? I value most freedom, space and time. On the other hand I value structure and routine and find them comforting. It is easier for me to create freedom, space and time for myself than structure and routine. That is why I unconsciously, or consciously, surround myself with people who have these skills. I value my family and friends and am grateful for the love and support they so generously offer. I can only hope I give them as much in return. I value the purity in people and the goodness within them.

I have no idea from where I get my creativity it’s just always been there. I’m not necessarily artistic, but my creativity comes in the form of having an abundance of ideas and scrapping together whatever is at hand to make it work.
I’ve always enjoyed making things especially herb arrangements and things from the garden. A friend and I happened into a fancy apothecary store several years ago and purchased a much needed sugar scrubs after two weeks of camping. The idea of making my own sparked sometime after, and I began researching the benefits of salt versus sugar and it took off from there.

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and from the start, I’ve enjoyed the entire process of making mineral baths and body scrubs. Starting my own business was a natural progression and one that is allowing me more and more to stay true to my values in daily decisions and efforts.
My creative process …. first it is always the dream. Second, it’s having a strong support team to bounce ideas off of. Next, it’s getting organized and doing one small step at a time. This is sometimes difficult for me, keeping a small picture, but visualizing and accomplishing the small steps is essential for success. Now that all sounds good, but in my more natural, not learned, process….it just happens-no plan. One of my favorite song lyrics is, “Look at all the good things that happened by accident.”

I truly enjoy being in my workspace with the music going, mixing small batches of salts, oils and scents-knowing that others will soon enjoy too. I also love that every small decision that I make requires creativity. I believe that each day offers a chance to laugh, share, create, dream and act. Through the simple joys of mineral baths and body scrubs, it is the mission of Melissa Blue Naturals to offer the highest quality salts, oils, and herbs as nourishment for the body and inspiration for daily life.

Cross Country Artists and Crafters!

Meet Lisa Saville and Dave Morgan from Tweedle Swamp Pottery...
Dave and I are married and live in the country near Sabina, Ohio. We have always been curious and enjoy creating and repurposing around our home. We both took art classes in college: Dave at Miami University and me at the Ohio State University. Early in our relationship, about 10 years ago we were looking for a creative outlet and took a pottery class together. We were hooked. After being gifted a second (or third) hand potters wheel and kiln, we set up a studio at our home and Tweedle Swamp Pottery was born.
After several years of work and study, we started looking for outlets to share our creations. We have attended several festivals and art shows in southern Ohio and Kentucky. Currently Tweedle Swamp Pottery is featured in shops in Hillsboro, Ohio and Wilmington, Ohio.

Clearly the inspiration for our work is in nature and observing our surroundings. We often use plant material, leaves, leather and metal to imprint and add dimension to pieces. We also look to each other for creativity and inspiration, bouncing ideas off one another. All pieces are one-of-a-kind, and food safe glazes are used on functional pieces.

Meet Sara from Lilly's Soap Kitchen...
We are a mother daughter business that makes vegan soaps, skincare and bath products. We started working out of our home and have grown so much that we were able to open a store in December 2012. Our shop, or artisan market, is located in historic fletcher place in downtown Indy and carries only handmade items from local artists. Our market is the perfect place to find unique gifts and home decor.

We have been making soap for only a year. We have been so successful that we were able to quit our "regular jobs" and work full time on the soap business. We have only done Indiana-based shows but we are excited to expand. We did a Christmas show in Louisville and are now doing shows in Ohio. We hope that our Ohio shows are as successful as our Indiana shows.

My mother is the creative genius. She has done everything from home decorating, to baking to sewing. She is always trying new techniques and coming up with creative ways to make our products even more adorable.
We have always been crafty and come from a very creative family. One year, we did a homemade Christmas in which all of our decorations and Christmas tree ornaments were all handmade. It was our favorite Christmas! It was only natural for us to turn a craft hobby into a business.

Why we went into business.. corporate America was growing old! We have always had the dream of owning our own business.  It wasn't until recently that we got into living organically. Having sensitive skin my entire life, it was difficult to find products I could use. After much research, we realized that good products didn't have to come from department stores and cost an arm and a leg. Good products are made with good ingredients and we could never find what we were looking for. So, we decided to make our own.  We only use grade A, unrefinded ingredients in our products because that's what I want to use on my skin. I have become the lab rat and I try every one of our products. I know if it will work on my skin, it will work on anyone's skin.
We are always thinking of new ideas for new products and ways to recreate old products.  Brainstorming has become a daily activity; whether its in the car, at the grocery store or at home watching tv.

The best thing about creating handmade items is listening to our customers.  Feedback from our customers is what keeps us in business. Good or bad, we love to hear it!

Our purpose is to offer consumers a healthy and non-toxic alternative to body care. We strive to produce products that are of the highest quality by abstaining from using harsh chemicals, dyes, and animal products. From mixing our ingredients, to tying each bow, every step in our process is completed with the same loving care.

Meet Lauren Butt from Cincinnati Wreaths...
Hi! My name is Lauren Butt and I am the Designer and Founder of CincinnatiWreaths.com. I currently live in Cincinnati with my crazy bullmastiff dog “Huey”, and I am a sales rep during the day. My background includes graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Fashion Design from the College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning (DAAP).

I have always loved creating things, doing art, interior decorating, etc. and a few years ago, I began making wreaths. At first, I mainly put them on my own doors, and eventually started giving them to friends/family for gifts.  Everyone really enjoyed them and kept telling me how much their guests just loved them! After some encouragement, and several people mentioning that I should try and sell them, here I am!! Things are going very well and with my custom ordering I can make any idea or occasion come to life! My wreaths are unique, fun, and one-of-a-kind that will brighten up any interior or exterior!

I have been doing this for 3 years and last year I started my website www.cincinnatiwreaths.com. This site has been great for out of town customers to view my work.
My creativity comes from my mother who was always interested in art and attended DAAP as well.  She focused primarily on fine arts and art history, but in her later years, she became interested in environmental design due to her love of the outdoors and flowers. She has always encouraged me to do what I love and be passionate about it.

I got into this hobby by chance when I needed a wreath for my front door and I couldn’t find any that I liked. In addition, I wanted a different one for each season. When I couldn’t find the right one, I started to create it! So that’s why I make wreaths for every holiday, occasion, or season!

My creative process take on several avenues such as a seeing a great, fun ribbon or finding a beautiful ornament, or even seeing a toy and thinking how to incorporate that onto a wreath.
I enjoy being able to go thru the creative process and have something unique and beautiful at the end. In addition, my work is a great way to welcome guests to your home or brighten up any interior!

The message behind my work is: Unique, Fun, One-of-a-Kind wreaths that will be sure to make your guests say Wow!

Meet Kristy from Daisy Mae Designs/The Crafty Hound...
My name is Kristy and I'm a Chicago transplant, living in Columbus, enjoying life with my husband and 3-year-old son. Daisy Mae Designs is named for our sweet, lazy beagle, Daisy Mae. The company started in 2008.

My passion is rescuing forgotten atlases from life in a dark, lonely basement or attic. I've had a bit of a love affair with maps since I was a wee one. I remember many long road trips with my parents, when I'd ask them to hand over the atlas to the backseat and I'd be occupied for hours, trying to figure out where we were and where we were going.

I got started in my business because creativity, while present in my day job, was lacking a bit in my life. I saw this as an opportunity to be creative on my own terms.
One of the great benefits of this work is learning about new places everyday, based on requests from clients. Whether it's seeking out a remote mountain village in the Alps for a necklace or a cozy beach town in California for a bookmark, this exercise has broadened my understanding of all those important places that my clients hold close to their hearts.

Knits to Nature!

Meet Casmen Gantner from White Barn Crafts...
My name is Casmen Gantner and I am the the owner of White Barn Crafts.  I grew up in rural northwestern Ohio and I am the typical farm girl that loves the simple life. Animals, nature and crafts are my passion.

I have been crafting it seems all my life. From finger painting and macaroni necklaces to the intricate earrings and bracelets I do now. I also love crocheting, counted cross stitch, sewing, cardmaking, cooking, and gardening so I don't sit still very often.

My inspirations come from everywhere but my creativity comes handed down from my grandmother and her sisters. They taught me to do a lot with very little! My grandmother firmly believed idle hands are the Devil's work and TV rots your brain. I could watch TV if I was also doing something else. That was the start of my addiction. Jewelry came about because I was finding it hard to accessorize my small frame, so I started making items that I could wear.
I know my current obsession in chainmaille might not reflect the farm life to most people, but to me it all seems to fit. On the farm we use a lot of machinery and man made items in our everyday life and chainmaille is an extension of that. To bring in the natural element I use other items such as crystals and semi precious stones. It is all about balance.

White Barn Crafts got started because my husband basically said if you want to keep making jewelry then you really need to sell some of this stuff and pay for your supplies. I think he was feeling a little over run! That started a word of mouth avalanche, and I was encouraged to try some of the smaller craft fairs. I absolutely loved it! Meeting new people and it was such fun!
My creative process has always been a little haphazard I admit. I will see a bead or a new color and an idea comes to my mind but it has to work over a little bit. I like it much more when a person comes to me and wants a piece, then I can try to match them. What colors work with them and what will be more comfortable with them. That makes it happen a lot faster. What I love best about making handmade jewelry and other crafted items, is making people feel special. It is my number one job. A person puts on that perfect piece and their walk and stance changes. It is amazing to see!

My message behind my work is to enjoy life. I have such a good time making my pieces and I hope it shows in the final product. Everything that has gone into the pieces, the sun, the rain, and the roosters crowing in the morning, has all gone into the necklace, bracelet, etc.

This will be my first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show and I am very excited and humbled to welcome into the family! We love our Facebook friends and at Facebook/WhiteBarnCrafts they can always see what new stuff we are doing.

Meet Tracy Markland from Tangled in Yarn...

I am a stay at home mom of four lovely children, and also a homeschooler. I used to live in a small town in Indiana. Once I got married I moved to Dayton, Ohio. I have been crocheting for over 13 years. It all began with watching my grandmother-in-law crochet, which made me interested in learning how to crochet. As I learned more about crocheting, I made baby blankets as gifts, which became treasured by the receivers.

Last September, I decided to turn my hobby into a way to earn extra money. Now, I am expanding my creativity by learning new things! Crocheting  baby  blankets, ear warmers, hats, scarves, and more! I also created a page on Facebook, and a business name for myself “Tangled  In Yarn”. Facebook, has given me a way to show more people what I can make!
This will be my first craft show with Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show. I am looking forward to the learning experience, and  getting “Tangled In Yarn’s” name out there!

My creativity comes from patterns I have found in books, online, or it may be  a pattern a customer request me to make. The most  satisfying part of making  a crocheted  item, is seeing how everything comes together. It gives me motivation to make more things! Everything that I make is made with love, and to last a long time. I would hope that shows in every item that I make.

Meet Linda Rath from Tino's Treasures...
I retired from The Ohio State University, Microbiology Department in December 2011. I grew up on a farm in southwest Ohio and have always enjoyed the outdoors. I’m married and have two grown children. I have been doing this since the summer 2012. This will be my first Avant-Garde event.

I get my creativity from everywhere. My husband and I enjoy travel, hiking, and camping. I’m inspired by the forms I see in nature. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and seeing where my creativity leads me. When I retired, I had plenty of time to “explore my artistic side”. I first began making fairy houses this summer after reading an article in the Columbus Dispatch. I began making frames when my husband and I “found” some old frames in a dumpster while walking in a park in Hilliard.
All the materials for my houses and frames are collected from nature and the frame bases are repurposed used frames. Preserving resources and the environment are important to me.

How I started my business…  My sister is potter. She has been exhibiting at shows for a few years now. (In fact, she will also be at this Avant-Garde show.) When I showed her some of my fairy houses, she invited me to share space with her at a show this past November 2012. Plus, I have a limited amount of space to store my creations!  I’m excited that this will be the first show where I exhibit my frames.

When it comes to my creative process.. first, I collect interesting items from nature that have a shape or texture that I like. I then select an old picture frame. Usually the shape and size of the frame helps me as I begin to choose nature items to turn it into one of “Tino’s Treasures”.

The thing I enjoy the most… It’s great to be able to start with an idea and then see what the house or frame looks like when I’m done. I’m never exactly sure what the end product will look like!

Meet Terry Lynch from Vintage Delights...
Vintage Delights began after retiring from the corporate world. I was finally able to begin making creations from all the vintage fabrics I had collected for years. The original idea came from a feature in Country Living Magazine years before retirement that I had put into a folder for "some day" ...

My creativity comes from the fabrics and trims. When I look at the vintage tablecloths and chenilles they speak to me and evolve into a different art form.

I began my hobby with pillowcase dresses then added vintage tablecloth totes, pillows, onto chenille clothing children and adult. I have now have added altered recycled denim jackets with funky designs, t-shirt skirts and my most enjoyable project, repurposed sweaters and coats. My Grandmother, was the Queen of "waste not-want not" and she is my inspiration. (My mannequin is lovingly named Maggie after her).
Starting my business just happened. Inventory started growing and I need to find an outlet to make room, so I could continue to create. I never thought my works would speak to people the way they do to me, but I have been so pleasantly surprised as my lines continue to grow and prosper. Hearing people recall past memories when they see the fabrics I use in my designs is so heartwarming.

Recycle - Reuse - Repurpose is the message I would love to have my creations convey as they put a smile on the faces of the people who see them.
